Default AMC's "Fear The Walking Dead" (Season 8)

Quote:
AMC announces ‘The Walking Dead’ spin off with new characters

A The Walking Dead spin off is in development, AMC announced this morning.

The Walking Dead spin off is in the works for a 2015 premiere, showrunners and the network said in a press release.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” said Kirkman. “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

The news of a Walking Dead spin off comes on the heels of AMC’s announcing a Breaking Bad spin off following Saul Goodman.

Hmm...Not sure that this is needed, but I wait to reserve judgement to see how it plays out.

I agree with you Walt, I don't think its needed at all..the regular series is standing strong on its own great cast, great acting and its doing a fine job with just skirting the story lines in the comics.

I think this is awesome...I hated the connection with the comic (even though they did change it around quite a bit). I always wondered what is going on in the rest of the world and would love to get away from Georgia. Brand new characters and situations sounds pretty good to me.

I agree, though I would amp up the new series in the action/suspense department to differentiate itself from the main product.

I was thinking the first season or so should explore how the whole outbreak started...was it a plot, was it an accident...etc...then show the early stages of the break out when it was nothing but chaos and intense zombie action.

The problem with the original is that Kirkman had to whip out the popular characters and settings to please the comic fans and what not...now he doesn't have to do that...that in itself sounds fresh to me.

There isn't exactly a glut of zombie shows. Another one is fine by me.

Why does Romero get to decide what The Walking Dead should be about? It's Robert Kirkman's baby. I love the direction of the comic and the show. Do we really need another "...of the Dead?" The last few have been pretty wack.

George Romero made an excellent point. Zombie movies should be about zombies, not the human drama that encompasses 95% of the production. Romero has been making zombie movies since way before AMC was around and long before Robert Kirkman's comic.

It might be hard to swallow, but he actually makes some good valid points.

Here's actually what was printed in the article:

Romero offered his thoughts on the current zombie craze in a conversation with Big Issue via Geeks of Doom. As Romero’s idea of the zombie is still going strong nearly 50 years after Night of the Living Dead, the magazine asked whether the appeal of these monsters would ever die. “Not in my book!” Romero responded.

Here's what Romero said:
Once they bleed out of pop culture I’ll be able to go back and do them again. I don’t want to touch them now. Gosh, they are all over the place. The Walking Dead is the number one television series in the States, World War Z, games, commercials… Ugh! It’s too much!

It feels like I don’t have a horse in the race. They asked me to do a couple of episodes of The Walking Dead but I didn’t want to be a part of it. Basically it’s just a soap opera with a zombie occasionally. I always used the zombie as a character for satire or a political criticism and I find that missing in what’s happening now.

How many people would say TWD is better than Romero's offerings?

I fall into that category.

All respect to the path that has been blazed on his part, but this is the most I have watched a 'zombie' film/show as I don't find it pointless and the actual content makes you think about the character's situations and choices more than a 2 hour movie can which leaves the viewer - invested. Maybe Romero is undervaluing this? Doubt anyone would ignore that. Anyway, my 2 cents.

+1

For me, surviving the new world is far more interesting than just fighting zombies.

Just because Romero says it should be more about the zombies doesn't mean it should. Being about the survivors and how they handle the world now is what Kirkman meant it to be about all along.

Totally! Humanity is way more dangerous than zombies or monsters.

I like a mixture of zombie/human aspects... some of my favorite moments of the series is the dynamic between Rick/Shane, and how their perspectives continued to change as things progressed and what effects that had on the group.

If it was specifically focused and exclusively about the zombies it would get boring and burn out fast, what Romero has to realize is that this is a serial and not a movie... having exclusive zombie threats in a movie is much more practical and would make more sense than an ongoing series.

I've felt that the last 2 seasons of the main series while good has become a bit stagnant and on a steady decline due to creative changes, i don't think the current creative team matches up with the first 3 seasons or so. I'm not greatly thrilled at the idea of a spinoff at the moment because i feel like there is a need to fix the main series in that regard before focusing on spinoffs.

Massive +1

I honestly hate Romero's films. I respect him enough for popularizing the zombie sub-genre and for making Dawn of the Dead so that Zack Snyder could make a superior version of it.

Great points to be honest I had never seen a zombie movie that I can remember. It just wasn't my thing and that's why I was so hesitant to watch TWD when it originally aired but after seeing the previews etc.. i watched the TWD "Pilot" the night it originally aired and haven't missed a episode yet.

Even though I like the showand I would not be that critical , I kind of agree with him. Sometimes it is too much of a soap opera. That was one of the reasons I was happy to have the mom die.

Exactly. Isn't the walking dead a reference to the human survivors and not the zombies going back to the comic? I remember Romero claiming to be a huge fan of TWD comic but Hates the show now that it's mainstream? I love romero but he hasn't made a decent "zombie" flick since the 70's. He's got no room to talk.
