And the DVD was done by Concorde in Germany, so that bodes well with it being Region Free.

You weren't kidding about the forced subtitles! I wish I'd seen this thread before importing it.

I seem to have a choice between watching in German or watching in English with German subtitles. If I try to turn off the subtitles manually, when English audio is selected, it says prohibited by disc.

I had none of this nonsense, when I imported the German blu-ray of Dances with Wolves! Why on Earth can't the user decide which audio/subtitle options to choose?

This is so stupid. I hope I can find a way round this or they will let me send it back.

I got this as well. I was hoping that the Oppo BDP-83 would be able to move the subtitles off screen, but sadly, that was not the case. It can shift them down a bit, but the amount of movement is limited. Beyond that, the transfer is okay, not great. Noticeable EE.

What makes it worse is that there are 2 subtitle tracks. There is a relatively large set that lies right on the bottom line of the image. Now you can go into the menu and select the English audio and then go back and deselect the German subtitles... whereupon when you play the movie, a smaller set of German subtitles will appear strickly within the black bar on the bottom.

And to confirm, you cannot select between the audio nor subtitles during playback. And to make it even worse, when you go to select the subtitles during playback, there is a no subtitle feature available.. you just can't access it.

What makes this choice even stranger is that I have other Concorde titles (such as THE LAST UNICORN) and you can change the audio and subs during playback, nor do you have forced subs.

Has anybody been able to successfully disable the subtitles with this disc? If so, what player. I've seen a lot of reviews for this title and only about 1/3 even mention the subtitles being forced. So either the other 2/3 wanted german subs for some reason and thus didn't try to disable them, or, it's an authoring issue that may only affect select players.

I got this from amazon Germany the other day, miraculously undamaged considering what they shipped it in. The subtitles are defeatable, but not through the disc itself. Whether you enable or disable the subs the disc locks in one of two different forms of text. Enabled the subtitles are large and split between the picture and the lower black bar (one line in one line out), disabled they're smaller and only a single line in the lower black bar (these may possibly be captions rather than subtitles). So disabled is certainly preferable for those who can't do the next trick, as it allows you to mask the text manually or electronically depending on the capabilities of the display. That said, if your hardware (player or display) allows for subtitle position adjustment, you can enable the subtitles on the disc and effectively shift them off the screen. I can confirm this trick works with the Oppo 103D.

Default This is one of my all-time faves

This is one of my all-time faves. I guess I'm kind of a weird cinephile because I love movies and have a large collection, but I almost never dive into the extra content, backstories, etc. I just really, really appreciate the art of a perfect film. That being said, I'm aware of all the drama behind 13th Warrior with McTiernan and everything, and how it ultimately ruined his life. A couple years back I wrote an impassioned letter to Disney to release it in North America, but I never heard anything back. There must be a way for us to get this ultimate motion picture in North America! Maybe a 4k edition...?

It's a nice idea, but if you see the French blu-ray, it's been utterly ruined by obnoxious green/sallow colour re-grading. Yuck. I'd be willing to bet that any new U.S. release would mangle the look of the film in the same way.

At least this German disc preserves the original (very appealing) colour timing. And that's essential.

As for the backstory, I've never really explored that, though I keep hearing about it. All I know is that I love the final product, and have always been a big McTiernan fan -- though the current, epic/heroic soundtrack (magnificent as it is) is unquestionably superior to whatever weird track I've heard McTiernan wanted to use.

The theatrical cut was apparently Michael Crichton's "producer's cut". He was the one who brought in Jerry Goldsmith to rescore the movie and reportedly cut it back, but even the opening of this version was cut down from what Goldsmith scored -- those first 10 minutes are just so ragged. I like the movie a lot but it was clearly "tampered with" and re-edited beyond a certain point that it started doing damage to the final product.

I found it on ebay, but was wondering if anyone knew what the source of the transfer was, how the picture looks, does it have hard coded subtitles... etc

Does anyone know if the subs are defeatable via RIP. I'd be fine with a decent copy for ripping if I can defeat these that way.
