Enemy at the Gates 4K UHD (2001) - Blu-ray Forum

GAGA will release Jean-Jacques Annaud's Enemy at the Gates (2001) on March 31st, 2023 as an exclusive to their online shop here:

GAGA are also releasing the film as a standalone Blu-ray at retail on the same date. The film was previously released on Blu-ray in Japan by Pony Canyon in 2013, so presumably this GAGA Blu-ray will also use the 4K master:

This is 4K Dolby Vision on iTunes from Paramount and if memory serves me right thought it looked good.

GAGA do great work - Their Japanese Release of Robert Redfords SPY GAME had an excellent audio track . And an AVC codec

But no English subs for The Lives of Others

Excellent, this is an old favorite of mine and I've been hoping it would get a physical 4K release.

Good question. Same thing I was wondering. Or even a UK release. It's a heavily desaturated flick, lots of dim light and grubby, dingy-looking browns and greys, but might look great on 4k with a respectful hdr pass.

Unfortunately,GAGA's store doesn't ship outside of Japan. However, this is now listed with CDJapan's proxy service:

For anyone who hasn't used them before, CDJapan are very good. The proxy service and shipping fees are reasonable and items are always packed well.

Thanks for offering to review it for us! I know shipments from Japan can be expensive.

Thankfully, this film did not have a DI so if the disc uses a recent scan and not slammed with DNR it could look quite good.

It should, the 4K is streaming here now so this has to be a remaster.

I'm just debating on waiting for it to possibly show up domestically, especially since Kino is licensing from Paramount if Paramount themselves doesn't get to it. Rather not fork down $60 or whatever just for this one film.

More Annaud in 4K is a good thing. Would love to see NAME OF THE ROSE and QUEST FOR FIRE especially since that one didn't even show up on Blu-Ray in the US somehow!

Are you saying that Kino is going to take this from Paramount if they don't do it themselves, or just that hypothetically they may do that in the future?

Right, sorry for the confusing wording. I was just saying Kino could license it from Paramount if Paramount isn't interested in doing it themselves, since Kino has released a bunch of 4K UHD's licensed from Paramount already this year.

It's possible this would be the type of title they might release...and I might wait to see if they do before importing this. That and finding out the quality of the Japanese disc too

No worries. Yup, makes sense to wait. It's hard enough to justify $40-60 for a single title and if you're going to do that you should be confident it'll look and sound good too.

I got Enemy at the Gates 4K UHD from Japan yesterday

I skimmed a few chapters and it looks the best I've ever seen it. The film grain is there and is not scrubbed. Detail looks good. HDR is nice. Even the menu is in English. The sound is fine it has the 5.1 MA and I believe the 2.0, but I only used the default 5.1. Not sure about extras...didn't care for them. I say this is a winner!
