Arrow Frankenstein (2025)

Quote:
Last week, director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he will probably begin filming his "Frankenstein" film in about five years, but has already cast his friend Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) as the monster.

To get a few more details, Sci Fi Wire caught up with Jones, who revealed that he learned of the news the same way as everyone else, on the internet.

"Guillermo did say to the press that he's already cast me as his monster, but we've yet to talk about it," he explained. "But in his mind, if that's what he's decided, then it's done. He's got a four-picture deal with Universal, so once he's done with The Hobbit, I think the first thing that's up on the docket will be Frankenstein. And reinvention is going to be the name of it, because he's going back to the Mary Shelley book and starting fresh with it."

Even though "Frankenstein" will not go into production for several more years, Jones said that he will soon meet with del Toro to begin doing make-up tests. "We are starting makeup tests, actually, in a couple weeks," he said. "We are going to do some tests just to see, because he has five years to play with this. He's taking that luxury of time to make this absolutely perfect."

Jones added that the monster will be based on the artwork of the famed horror illustrator Bernie Wrightson, who spent close to a decade creating illustrations for a special print edition of Shelley's Frankenstein. "It will not be a big, lumbering Boris Karloff type, but more of a skinny, skeletal, stringy-muscled version made from spare parts of some other guy," Jones said.

Thumbs up

5 years from now is a long wait but with Del Toro at the helm this should be the best Frankenstein movie to date.

I'm glad to hear Doug Jones is playing Frankenstein; he is probably the best costume actor IMO.

I also think Guillermo is perfect for helming the project.

Why not Matt Damon as Frankenstein and Ben Affleck as Dr. Frankenstein and whole thing directed by Micheal Bay?

If they're going back to the book, I hope they remain faithful to it.

I'm definitely going to watch this when it hits. I really enjoy del Toro's style.

Awesome, Del Toro is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors. Everything he does is good - I can't wait for The Hobbit films.

I have the Dark Castle comic of Frankenstein with Bernie's illustrations. It is truly amazing. Years ago, I was in a stage production of Frankenstein, playing the creature and drew my character inspiration from his illustrations.

del Toro is more than capable of doing a terrific Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus.

Guillermo del Toro has said that Frankenstein will not be filmed in 3D and he doesn't want the movie to be post converted to 3D. Really hope this movie get's made and can't wait to see it.

The director admitted that he had no interest in making The Hobbit in 3D when he was attached to the project, and went on to discuss the various movies he has in development.

"I do believe that big spectacle movies like Avatar or At The Mountains Of Madness or The Haunted Mansion should be in 3D," he remarked.

"Frankenstein, I will fight for it not to be in 3D, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde I wouldn't like it to be 3D. Slaughterhouse-Five, I think Kurt Vonnegut would have smiled either way."
I wonder if that might have been a contributing reason for his departure from The Hobbit. I have a feeling that he would be right about Vonnegut .
I would liked to have heard his commentary on 3D. I'm sure it would be hilarious and have simple truth to it.

I didn't know this movie still had steam. I look forward to it, hopefully with Doug Jones as the monster.

Really? I loved Hellboy 2 despite the backtracking with Manning and the way they handled the exclusion of Meyers.

Guillermo del Toro Promises Surprise for his Frankenstein

Quote:
Remember when Guillermo del Toro announced he was doing his own version of Frankenstein. We do. Very well. As huge fans of anything Frankenstein related that announcement has been burned into our brains. It's been quiet on that front for a while. Until now.

During his panel at the San Diego Comic-Con Guillermo gave updates on several upcoming projects. In terms of Franksenstein del Toro promised that there's one big thing different in his version of Frankenstein than all the others, but he wouldn't elaborate further.
Really hope one day we can see this movie.
