United Kingdom The Blood Beast Terror (Tigon Collection) 88 Films

Pre-order: Amazon.co.uk & HMV
Release date: 12th August, 2024

Quote:

A series of blood-thirsty murders is investigated by Inspector Quennell and Sgt. Allan of Scotland Yard. But when their search for the killer leads them to the door of strange entomologist Dr. Carl Mallinger and his beautiful daughter Clare, events take a nightmarish turn in this 19th-century tale of transformation, monsters, and terror. Starring the legendary Peter Cushing and directed by Vernon Sewell (Curse of the Crimson Altar) this Tigon cult classic offers up a heady mix of late 60s British horror.

At the rate these are coming out, I'd be very surprised if any of the 4 Tigon titles for July and August are from new scans.

Way back when i was a teenager and loved any british horror, even i could see this was well below hammer and amicus

Peter Cushing considered it his worst film and the only thing i can remember about it is Roy Hudd appearing incongruously as a "hilarious" morgue attendant eating his lunch around the corpses

if it's got some interesting extras, i might be tempted to pick it up at some point to see if it has improved or at least not worsened with age

It may seem controversial to many, but I personally like The Blood Beast Terror which, like films of that genre and period, better in most cases or possibly worse than TBBT I consider to have a certain charm which we don't see anymore. Even though modern horror films are my era I really don't care for them, the extreme violence, gore and swearing I find unpleasing.

I have the Spanish BD release of The Blood Beast Terror and I will be ordering the 88 Films's release.

Our slasher movie, collector aficionados on here will be thinking this.

With DOOMWATCH being announced also, I'd be surprised as well.

The Blood Beast Terror received a 2K restoration from Kino in 2022, while Shout released an excellent transfer of Island of Terror in 2017 (no need to rebuy if you have these). But Doomwatch could really use a fresh scan.

The Kino re-release of BBT was not from a new 2K restoration - it was the same 2012 restoration used for the previous US and UK releases.

Certainly one of the lesser pictures from that period, but I’ll be picking this up. Hopefully we’ll see the far superior The Creeping Flesh at some point. The existing blu ray from Mill Creek isn’t too bad.

Bizarre premise and I find the ending to this hilarious! Film has a charm to it though and I admire it for that

Dammit I wish I hadn’t picked up the Kino a few months back. Still, I gotta get this for the cover alone, FINALLY, a cover that fits the film perfectly, as opposed to the cover with Dracula on it.

Zero chance we'll see The Creeping Flesh get a UK release while Kevin Francis holds it hostage.

There was a UK DVD from DD Video on some point - when did he get hold of it?

I was not a big fan of this as a kid because I found it was too slow. But I bought the Redemption blu-ray a year or two ago (which has a very nice transfer, but zero extras) and after seeing it with grown up eyes, I found it quite interesting. And most importantly, fun.

I really like Blood Beast. It’s not up there with the classics of the era, but it’s a solid second tier effort that I’d rate alongside The Reptile, Curse of the Crimson Altar, Twins of Evil etc.

I’m surprised how badly regarded it is.

Me too, I have the Redemption Blu-ray but I will be adding this release to my 88 Films Tigon collection.

I managed to snag that while the getting was good, and have held on to it because of the awesome Christopher Lee commentary. Grabbed the DD Video release of NIGHT OF THE BIG HEAT at the same time.
