Default Luigi Mangione Documentary | Alex Gibney

Award-winning documentary maker Alex Gibney working on a Luigi Mangione doc:

Quote:
It was a story that rocked the nation. And now, the first project about the brazen, broad daylight killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is on the way.

Anonymous Content and Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Prods. are teaming up to develop and produce a documentary about the Dec. 4 fatal shooting that took place in midtown Manhattan just before Thompson was set to speak at an investor conference.

Five days after the shooting, Luigi Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania for the killing, adding a compelling layer to the tale given that the handsome 26-year-old was the valedictorian of his posh Maryland high school and is an Ivy League graduate. Mangione was allegedly carrying a manifesto when he was detained that referenced another documentarian, Michael Moore, whose 2007 film “Sicko” offered a searing indictment of the U.S. healthcare system. The new doc from Anonymous and Jigsaw will explore how killers are created, what this killing says about our society and the values we place on who lives and who dies.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, who has made films about Enron, Scientology and Russian President Vladmiri Putin, has set his sights on another controversial figure: Luigi Mangione.

Gibney, who has been working on the project since the end of last year, has now sold the project to Hulu.

The streamer has greenlit the untitled project with filming underway.

It comes nine months after Mangione allegedly gunned down Brian Thompson, CEO of health insurance company UnitedHealthcare in broad daylight in midtown Manhattan. Mangione was charged with four federal crimes including murder and was formally indicted in April.

Gibney’s untitled film will highlight how the killing of Thompson on a New York City sidewalk transfixed the public. It will explore explores the complicated story beneath the headlines and investigate “how the spectacle of violence can obscure deeper truths”.

Gibney directs and will produce via his Jigsaw Productions company with Anonymous Content also producing. Trevor Davidoski and John Jordan will produce. Gibney, Razan Ghalayini and Richard Perello will exec produce for Jigsaw with Jessica Grimshaw and David Levine exec producing for Anonymous Content.

It is Gibney’s latest project for Hulu; he co-created and directed the first episode of scripted series The Looming Tower, which told the story of the threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in the late 1990s and the rivalry between the FBI and CIA.

Gibney, who is working on an Elon Musk documentary, recently directed HBO’s The Dark Money Game and Wise Guy: David Chase and the Sopranos, and produced The Bibi Files, an inside look into the corruption charges against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It joins Hulu’s doc slate, which includes recent projects such as God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down a Dynasty, Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons, Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence, Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told and Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke, which was Hulu’s biggest docuseries premiere to date.

“Following our collaboration on Looming Tower, I am delighted to join forces with Hulu to tell this powerful and important story,” said Gibney. “In the tradition of previous Jigsaw investigations, I think that people who think they know the story will be surprised and moved by the details hiding behind the headlines.”

I'm not watching this movie. If I was a director, I would not make this movie. If I was in charge of a streaming platform, I would not allow this movie on my platform. Murderers do not deserve their own documentaries. I never want to see any pictures or video of Luigi Mangione again unless they're pictures or video of him being executed.

You want to know how killers are made? Here's how killers are made:

-Too many parents try to be their kids' friend instead of giving kids discipline and setting limits when necessary.
-Too many schools spend too much time boosting kids' self-esteem, turning them into overconfident arrogant brats who overestimate their capabilities. At best, they waste their time trying to accomplish the impossible. At worst, they get themselves and/or other people killed.
-Too many schools spend too much time honoring people who change the world and not enough time honoring people who adapt to the world and accept it as it is. Not all change is good. Some change can be very harmful.
-Too many police departments are undermanned, underequipped, underfunded and vilified.
-Too many judges are too scared to throw the book at those who have been found guilty. I hope Luigi Mangione gets the death penalty. They use the death penalty a lot more frequently in China and crime is much lower there.

Luigi Mangione isn't a hero, he's a monster. He did not solve any problems, he did not make anyone's lives any better, all he did was cause pain and misery and suffering.

True crime is one of the most popular documentaries and podcasts.
