Default Alfred Hitchcock's Best Film (sound)

Alfred Hitchcock is without a doubt one of the greatest directors of all time.

What film (excluding his silent films) do you consider his best?

Cool photoshop image I found on tumblr

My favorite is North By Northwest, but I think his "best" objectively is Psycho.

I am actually torn between Psycho and Vertigo. Vertigo, in my opinion has a better ending, but I love Psycho. Hermann's scores are both excellent.

I guess I will go with Vertigo, because of the outstanding cinematography .

What exactly are you referring to with 'best sound'? The score, or the sound editing?

You do make a good point, I am excluding his silent films. I had a feeling someone will call me out for not including his silent films. Now I made it somewhat ambiguous.

I will try to make it clear in the original post.

Thank you for your feedback.

He just means the best film that isn't a silent film.

I love many of his movies, but I always go back to Vertigo. There's something so elegant, mysterious, and beautiful about the story and the filmmaking. It's his most interesting and exciting movie for me.

Rear Window all the way, followed by North by Northwest.

For the record, I've seen the following:

The Lodger
The 39 Steps
Saboteur
Shadow of a Doubt
Lifeboat
Rope
Strangers on a Train
Rear Window
Vertigo
North by Northwest
Psycho
The Birds
Marnie
Torn Curtain
Frenzy

I had to vote for Rear Window. It was tough, but that's the one I can watch over and over and over. Psycho, North by Northwest, Vertigo, Strangers on a Train, and Lifeboat were close seconds

Vertigo is his unquestioned masterpiece imo.

It's just an incredible cinematic achievement in every way--acting, story, music, technical merits etc.

But it's not my favorite Hitchcock film to watch.

...that would be Psycho or Rear Window.

And I assumed the question was asking which film do you think, objectively, is the best film he ever made.

Not, "What's your personal favorite Hitchcock film?"

...though I have no doubt that many people will be incapable of answering the first question and not the second.

I voted for Rear Window, although it was a tough pick between that and Vertigo. They're both five-star movies, and they're both especially wondrous when viewed in a theater.

I ultimately gave Rear Window the edge because of the incredible set design, which comes across so much better on a theater screen.

Alfred Hitchcock is my favorite director, and I have yet to see a Hitchcock film that I've disliked. Even the supposedly lesser titles, such as Jamaican Inn, have their distinct charms.

Am I the only one who finds the Jimmy Stewart character in Vertigo to be a total douchebag?
