Yes, it is totally inconceivable that Mattel would try to milk the film rights for all they're worth. That's got to be totally made up!

There’s plenty of animated Barbie movies out there.

The cheaply made ones that go straight to streaming? Sure. But if they're getting Illumination involved, then it's obviously to make a big-budget movie that people will want to watch in cinemas

True. But I don’t see the problem with making a more expensive animated film. It won’t impact the live action one much if at all.

I think Margot Robbie sees the problem. If the animated movie is successful, why would they bring back an expensive human for a sequel when they can pump out another animated movie for a fraction of the price?

Plus, she's probably turned down roles she's being considered for and left money on the table under the assumption that a follow-up to the live action Barbie will be happening soon.

I would prefer a Jem and Holograms animated movie.

The Barbie franchise will continue beyond the live action movie. The director and star of the live action movie can lose as much sleep as they want to over it, that train is going to keep rolling forward whether they like it or not. They can cry into the dollars they made from their movie.

Robbie has stated, several times, she has no interest in a follow-up.

All of the previous animated Barbie feature films were clearly aimed at preschool/elementary aged girls. Very limited appeal. How will this one differ other than more money spent on the animation and marketing? Will it be the first PG-13 Illumination film in order to appeal to teens/adults? Seems like it needs to have some edge or be a parody, which would step on the live action version’s toes. It’ll be interesting to see what the take is.

Not sure why Gerwig or Robbie would care if they aren't doing a sequel. Did they think Mattel wouldnt do anything with Barbie again? At least it's something different than just doing a lame "Barbie 2" with none of the cast, which almost certainly would have happened in the 80s or 90s.

Of course, I don't think highly of the first movie (ok at best for me), so I wouldn't mind something different at all.
