![]() ![]() Almost a decade after Lucky McKee burst upon the indie horror scene and became a ‘Master of Horror’ in the making thanks to his directorial debut May, he teamed up with legendary cult author Jack Ketchum for his most shocking and brutal film to date: The Woman, an instant cause célèbre on its Sundance premiere. The Woman (Pollyanna McIntosh, The Walking Dead) is the last surviving member of a deadly clan of feral cannibals that has roamed the American wilderness for decades. When successful country lawyer Chris Cleek (Sean Bridgers, Room) stumbles upon her whilst hunting in the woods, he decides to capture and “civilize” her with the help of his seemingly perfect all-American family, including his wife Belle (Angela Bettis, May) and daughter Peggy (Lauren Ashley Carter, Darling). The Cleeks will soon learn, however, that hell hath no fury like The Woman scorned… Experience McKee and Ketchum’s uncompromisingly twisted vision of the dark side of the American family in a definitive new edition, including a 4K remaster and brand new bonus features. https://diabolikdvd.com/product/the-...yBpdDtQ7dPvW08 (Note: The UK and Canadian releases come with Offspring.) This film is a real tour de force. I always thought it a shame that the features never included the video of the man being thrown out of the screening for complaining about the film's so called misogyny. That fella was scarier than the movie itself!
The late Jack Ketchum was one hell of a writer. It's worth mentioning that he and Lucky McKee teamed up on a book called The Secret Life Of Souls. I can't recommend it enough. Not only does it deal with the dark side of American domesticity (something of a hallmark for Ketchum) but also dog lovers will adore this book. |

I really like this movie, but I'm still completely underwhelmed by this announcement. If it was a trilogy boxset with Darlin' I'd be all over it, but Offspring is a pile of crap, and apparently won't even be on the US version.
The current blu-ray is good enough for me, I guess. I can't think of any feature that would make me buy this a second time other than the inclusion of its sequel. This isn't Arrow's fault, but the main thing this announcement makes me think was "a second, full-fledged release of The Woman, and still no first release of the same director's May?!" |

I think I liked it more because I had no idea what the plot was the first time I watched it, but for those who would rather know what they're getting into:
It's kind of a black, black comedy about a horrible sexist upper middle-class father capturing a wild woman he finds in the woods and keeping her in the barn as a slave to educate his rotten son about how women must be subjugated. The wife and daughters of the family are meek hostages of this chipper tool (they do not get off the hook for their complicity, the movie is contemptuous of the wife as well), and occasionally the weird black comedy vibe is broken for moments of real nastiness. Things get very messy in the last act. It's a very, very angry movie when it comes to patriarchal ideas. The dad/son are some of the most loathsome horror characters this side of the stepbrother in Teeth. But, if you want a good feminist horror/splatter movie, you might be better off with something a little less challenging and less offbeat like Revenge. It's less of your standard rape/revenge "feminist" horror movie like American Mary or something, and more of a scathing portrayal of toxic masculinity (Deadgirl does similar things, but I hate that movie). It's a shaggy movie and not for all tastes. But, for my money, it's probably one of the best horror movies of the 2010s. Just not one I would recommend to any of my conservative friends, or to anyone without a strong stomach. |

Wow, I'm really glad I checked this thread. When I saw the announcement I thought that Offspring was included in the U.S. version. Surprised that you can only buy it from Unobstructed View or Diabolik.

Has anyone ordered the Canadian edition from Unobstructed View? I just cancelled my U.K. edition. From UV it cost 37.xx USD shipped. It’s quite a bit more than the U.K. order but it’s been taking 45 days to get orders from Europe.
