Default Francis Ford Coppola's One From the Heart (Reprise)

Quote:
Francis Ford Coppola‘s “One From the Heart: Reprise” is getting a restored re-release.

The 1982 film, which follows a couple in Las Vegas, landed a “Reprise” cut with more than 19 minutes of additional footage in September 2023, debuting at the Venice Film Festival. Overseen by Coppola, the 4K restoration of the “Reprise” cut comes courtesy of distributor Rialto Pictures, which will release the film in select theaters on January 19.

“I’ve always loved ‘One from the Heart,’ despite the disruption it caused in my dreams for American Zoetrope,” Coppola said. “However, there is magic in cinema and while preparing this film for 4K, it was apparent I could refine the story. This new version is an improvement in many ways and I am proud of what was achieved with ‘One from the Heart: Reprise.'”

“One From the Heart” centers on Hank (Frederic Forrest} and Frannie (Teri Garr) who break up on their fifth anniversary. Heading in separate ways and taking to the streets, they both meet and spend the night with strangers: Hank with the seductive Leila (Nastassja Kinski) a runaway circus performer, and Frannie with Ray (Raul Julia), a handsome waiter who moonlights as a cocktail pianist and singer. After another showdown, Frannie says that she is leaving Hank for Ray and that they plan to escape to Bora Bora. However, Hank follows her to the airport in a last-ditch attempt to win her back.

Lainie Kazan and Harry Dean Stanton also star in the film, which features an Oscar-nominated soundtrack by Tom Waits. Gene Kelly served as the choreographer for the musical.

The 4K restoration of “One From the Heart: Reprise” opens in New York and Los Angeles before rolling out to additional cities across the U.S. StudioCanal and Park Circus will be releasing the film in cinemas and home entertainment in the UK and Germany in early 2024.

The restoration was supervised by Coppola and made in 4K by American Zoetrope and Roundabout Entertainment in the U.S. The 4K scans were lifted from the original camera negative, and great efforts have been made to add 13 minutes of original camera negative, restoring opticals and dupe negative. The restoration was approved by Coppola himself, as six minutes of IP were added to replace the original negative thought to be destroyed in a flood in Rome where the negative was kept.

Coppola most recently directed self-funded “Megalopolis” starring Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and a slew of A-listers in the ensemble cast.

“One From the Heart: Reprise” opens January 19 at the IFC Center in New York and at the Alamo DTLA in Los Angeles. Additional cities across the U.S. will follow.

Saw this in the theater when it came out. It wasn't great but it's been a long time since I've seen it.

I wouldn't mind revisiting the movie.

I love Teri Garr, I feel sad she's going through a lot of health issues.

Anyone living near Chicago can check out the 4K premiere at the Siskel theatre later this month.

I've owned the Blu-ray since it came out in that Coppola set, but never got around to watching it. The reviews at the time said it was a pretty bad transfer.

I caught it this weekend at IFC and visually it's a stunner. The music sweeps. Teri Garr, Raul Julia, Natassja Kinski, and Harry Dean are terrific.

Frederic Forrest...yikes. Allen Garfield delivered a better performance than he.

I did manage to watch it in 35mm at a revival theater some years ago (didn't catch it when it was first released). I think for all of its flaws, the look of the movie is truly a wonder to behold.

If only this one could have been a hit for Zoetrope Studios, Coppola's life would have turned out very differently (and we probably wouldn't have gotten The Godfather Part III, either)

Is it clear to anyone what the statement "six minutes of footage have been added to replace the original negative, previously thought to be destroyed" means? It just doesn't make sense to me.

1. The movie's negative was kept in Rome.
2. The original negative (or parts of it) are thought to be destroyed by said flood
3. They've gone back and used the IP to replace the six minutes that were apparently destroyed.

I think at this point the only one FFC is looking to satisfy is himself. So the new cut will be the length he wants it to be without any other consideration.

Just got my UK 4K set, looking forward to watching the new cut, and revaluating the film.

Amazon US still does not have the disk but Amazon UK does. I've searched other US outlets (Deep Discount, Best Buy, Was-Mart, Gruv, Barnes & Noble, Target, FYE) but no one has it.

Anyone know a US-based outlet selling this disc?

OrbitDVD currently has this in-stock, both UHD and regular blu-ray (Region B) editions. I guess the UHD version is a 4-disc set, 2 UHD's and 2 blu-ray's. Their price is nearly $40 so I kinda wish StudioCanal would've dropped the blu-ray's from the UHD edition to lessen the price some, if that's even a thing. I'm sure Lionsgate have an impending announcement coming for a much cheaper stateside set, but I couldn't resist. Blind-buy for me.

There's a review for it here: https://www.avforums.com/reviews/one...-review.21598/

I wonder if it's the argument scene at the beginning of the film that has been missing from all home video releases except the original VHS

Doesn't appear to be. Looks like Reprise is fairly similar to the "restored" version from 2003 in that it trims the arguments in the early scenes. But it's a further 6 minutes shorter than the restoration, even after adding several extensions and brief scenes. Some of the changes do bring it back in line with the theatrical cut, but the arguments aren't among them.

If I understood the writeup on Movie-Censorship correctly - it's convoluted enough that I couldn't completely follow it. The changes are extensive and sometimes involved restructuring.

It's definitely a new cut distinct from the other two. It contains footage not found in either of the other two versions, but is also the shortest of the three.

Now the question is which version will Lionsgate use for their 4K version? Certainly not the Reprise version. Coppola likes to do lots of editing as with the Reprise version. The VHS tape version is different with other scenes that were cut in the earlier BR version.

Oh, I'm sure it will be Reprise. Coppola's last few movies through Lionsgate were things like Apocalypse Now: Final Cut and B'Twixt Now and Sunrise: The Authentic Cut. Both are his recent recuts. Lionsgate appears to be handling his recent recuts of the movies he owns the rights to.

Got my U.K. Release. It looks very nice. I prefer the theatrical to the Reprise as Francis got it right the first times. If one is a fan of the theatrical cut, the U.K. Version is the one to get as it looks as if it will only receive a Blu-ray release in the U.S. edition.
