Default CBC News: "The (high) definition of 'buyer beware'"

From CBC in Canada

Overall, those three are a pretty reasonable bunch.

I find it odd that (Im Canadian) that I havent met one person yet that has HD-DUD in their homes. But yet, during summer sales, the dweebs at Futureshop were pushing that over BD all because of p@rn? Oh well its all moot now. With the turn-over at local Futureshop, I really cant go back there and have a word with last summers sales staff :P Last I checked they were all gone.

I am constantly fighting and having conversations with people about DUD. Now that Blu has one. I show them, and they hate sony and waiting for Downloads, or the other excuse is

A family friend bought a HD DVD player against my advice last week. It was on final clearance and now he can't bring it back.

Well, he should had listened to me in the first place.

I personnaly don't know anyone in my circle of friends that has blu-ray or HD-DVD in their home at the moment, though I know a few with HD TV. But I would see a lot of people buying discs at my local Best Buy store. My dad, however, was under the impression last December that HD-DVD was winning, I quickly showed the real stats. HD-DVD really did use a lot of FUD and misinformation that made it to uninformed media as well as users.

Still, I'm impressed how those three "pollees" are simply taking their lumps in stride.

Some of these people are on crack...

Did you know about the format war going in, and how did it weigh on your decision to buy?

I knew about the format issues … I was looking at the cheaper cost between the two formats, Blu-ray and HD-DVD. At the time, it was the affordable way to go and there was a fair market out there. At one point, the movies were outselling Blu-ray.
When the f$#% did HD outsell Blu??? The first month it was released since Blu-Ray wasn't out yet???

Again - the individual "learned" this from media FUD. Same with the fellow who talks about the Warner releases being superior on HD-DVD. Unless he had both formats at home (in which case he still would not have said this), only by reading this bit of misinformation on a HD-DVD site could he have possibly thought such a things - unless he was merely concerned with the Warner extras. Still, none of them whine. Stiff upper lip and all that ...

When somene says that, just tell them that the same could be said for HD DVD. Then ask them why did they support HD DVD.

Ironic that almost everyone of those people mentioned price as being a significant factor in their decision.

The irony is that it was the price that actually killed HDDVD. It shut out every manufacturer in the world except Toshiba (who was subsidizing the cost heavily) from entering HDDVD.

One manufacturer can not win a format war alone.

Price killed HD DVD? I thought studio support and the PS3 killed HD DVD.

no the irony is that if they want HD movies (presumably why they bought HD DVD in the first place) they need to buy a BD player, meaning that they end up paying more then if they just bought BD in the first place.

You guys noticed that 2 out of the 3 were the xbox add-ons. Hmmm...seems to me that the HD-DuD camp was saying that it was sad that the PS3 was considered one of the best players when 2 thirds (according to the article) go the add on. I only know one person who has an HD-DVD player and it was the add-on to the 360 as well LOL. Everyone else went blu or waiting for a clear winner.

As for the pricing, of course it was one of the many reason why Toshiba threw in the towel. You need to make money somewhere and you have investors to answer to as well. You can't sell products constantly at a loss (you shouldn't do that at all) it's always bad business.

Reminds me of an airline here in Canada called JetsGo. They were selling seats on Sundays for 1$. Of course a year later they declared bankruptcy.
