Bad new, per Mister Lime in the Kino thread:

We decided to cancel the release of Valmont. We could've released the very good MGM HD master, but couldn't get access to the new 4K restoration done by Pathé, who's asking price was ridiculous. We had interviewed the film's producer and were working on other extras.

Watched this for the first time last night, after years of stupidly thumbing my nose at it because I'm a fan of Frears' version, and I couldn't have been more surprised and pleased. Here's hope some other label will acquire the rights and release the movie sooner rather than later, even if it's that "very good MGM HD master".

If it’s the same master that airs on MGM HD, it is cut by 3 minutes.

A couple of notes on the Pathe French Blu-Ray with the 4K transfer:

1. It is region free

2. If you own an Oppo, the forced French subtitles can be completely moved off the screen because Pathe used a smaller font than usual.

Just an FYI. I just received the Region B Italian edition BD. It has the Pathe remastered in 4K. DTS-HD MA 5.1 English with no forced subtitles. PQ is excellent, an easy 4.5/5. AQ is also excellent but being a dialogue-heavy costume drama, the surrounds don't get a lot of activity other than some scenes of carriages racing past. Packaging also comes in a snazzy gold case with some rather racy cover art. Zero special features.

I also imported the Italian Blu-ray and as you say, it comes with a snazzy gold case. No forced subtitles and the picture quality is excellent. Had been after this title for a while.

Some movies have some of subtitles authored to appear at the top of the screen and when you move them down it ends up putting those “top” subtitles in the middle of the screen. Is that an issue with the Pathe disc?

So will this release be the "very good MGM HD master" or the Pathé 4k restoration? I'm curious since the Kino announcement says "new 2k master". Or is it stated as 2K so they don't confuse anyone in thinking it may be a UHD release?

The Kino Lorber Insider mentioned earlier that it would not be 4K French transfer, but it wouldn't be the older MGM master either. Kino is created their own brand new 2K scan from the interpositive created from the film's original camera negative

Can't wait. Been looking forward to this one and "Duet For One" with Julie Andrews coming from Kino sometime this year as well. Never thought it would see a blu release and I was losing hope for "Valmont". Both at the top of my wish list.
