USA Breaking Away (1979) is coming to Blu-ray!

Release date: January 20th

PRE-ORDER http://www2.screenarchives.com/title...ING-AWAY-1979/

Quote:
Special Features: Isolated Score Track / Audio Commentary with Actor Dennis Christopher, and Film Historians Julie Kirgo and Nick Redman / Road to Adulthood / Original Theatrical Trailer
Quote:
Breaking Away (1979) is an utterly endearing coming-of-age story about a quartet of recent high school graduates—working-class “townie” kids in the university town of Bloomington, Indiana—trying to sort out their possibilities. Played, superlatively, by Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, and Jackie Earle Haley, this is a group coming to terms with their own outsider status and realizing that they won’t be able to depend on each other forever. Director Peter Yates (in a surprising departure from the likes of Bullitt) gives us a lovely, sunlit interpretation of Steve Tesich’s Oscar®-winning screenplay, which zeroes in on Dave (Christopher), his eternally exasperated father (the marvelous Paul Dooley), and his understanding mother (Barbara Barrie in divine form); the result is a film that presents us with the Middle America of all our dreams.

Terrific film! I first saw Breaking Away in a class in high school and it has stuck with me all these years later.

Awesome pic, loved it! As part of the extras I'd love to hear the father and son talking over the movie and possibly include discussion/clips of them being together again as father and son on Law and Order

The 1979 coming-of-age film, Breaking Away, looks amazing on this Twilight Time Blu-ray, and, during an early scene with Dennis Christopher cycling on a rural road, the rays of sunlight seem to shine through the trees, through the screen, and into my living room. The rustic and endearingly unkempt vibe of late 1970s America comes across with a beautiful clarity, and the Patrick Williams music sounds terrific. The commentary track, which features Christopher himself, is an engaging listen.

I imagine that everyone can relate to the opening scene of Breaking Away, where the four best friends, Dave (Dennis Christopher), Mike (Dennis Quaid), Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley), and Cyril (Daniel Stern), are chilling out at a rock quarry, because we all probably remember those gloriously aimless times from younger years when we imagined that our best friends would stay by our sides forever. The film effortlessly brought me back to those moments of camaraderie, back to heartbreaking memories of when my naivety was shattered by seeing the harshness of how some things really work in the world, and back to times of interactions with my parents that seem comical in retrospect. Dennis Christopher, whom I mainly associate with his role as the adult Eddie Kaspbrak in the television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's IT, is a charming underdog lead that we all want to pull through, and it's somewhat ironic that he is now the least recognizable of the four main actors. Barbara Barrie and Paul Dooley hit all of the right notes as Dave's parents.

This slice of small-town Americana has a undercurrent of sadness, in a Bruce Springsteen "Glory Days" sort of way, because we sense that these four townies may encounter greater hardships after going their separate directions in life. More than anything, though, Breaking Away conveys the joy of those priceless moments of youth when we faced adversity and won battles with friends at our side, and how those moments from the past remind us that anything is still possible.

What a great, great film...

Wow, 1980 was an amazing year for Best Picture nominees. Breaking Away, Norma Rae, All That Jazz, Apocalypse Now, and Kramer Vs Kramer.

Go figure, my least favorite of the bunch (Kramer Vs Kramer) wins.

I'd be a bit cautious. I see that it was released the same day as the Fox Japan release of "The Rose" and that was presented in an incorrect color space.

Only two reviews of the Breaking Away Blu-ray, but one is 5/5 and the other is 4/5. Though the translation is a little rough, the 5/5 specifically mentions PQ:
Quote:
I have watched it several times, but the excitement when I watched it at the theater was revived because I watched it on Blu-ray. In the United States seems to have been released Blu-ray from Twilight Time company in limited to 3000 sheets in 2016, seems to be a difficult situation to get.

The footage was as expected. Blu-ray is a vivid color, consistently bright and easy to watch while retaining a moderately original film feeling. The kind of dust seen on the DVD is also removed cleanly, coupled with color adjustment to a clear impression. Dave's bike's red color, yellow and blue wear, the color of the pool, the climax scene audience and players, the impression is completely different from the DVD. The clear picture also conveys the heat of Indiana and the air of the energetic race, making the film feel more polished.

Got the Japanese blu-ray today. Picture is very soft, but it is comparable to a few other blu-rays of 1970's pictures I have where they haven't done brand new 4k scans. I haven't seen this film in a while, does AMC no longer play it regularly? I don't doubt the above review that it is clearer than the dvd. Outdoor scenes with a lot of natural light, like swimming at the quarry, look very good. Reds are vibrant. No special features, only choice of English or Japanese language tracks, & English or Japanese subtitles. Other than that, it is likely the same as the Twilight Time disc.

With Sandpiper releasing some former TT releases, what are the odds that Breaking Away gets a re-release?

Close to zero, unfortunately. At least for now. Sandpiper is releasing former TT titles that are controlled by MGM. This film is now with Disney, who for the time being is not licensing films out to any label.

Correct, it has the dreaded Fox logo on back, otherwise known as the "logo of death" for blu-ray collectors.

The TT wasn't "very soft" and looked pretty great for an older scan.

So it's either the same HD master and NOT very soft, or a bootleg from an inferior master.
