Default Can you...

1)Can you send a True HD or DTS HD audio signal out of the PS3 through an optical audio cable?

2)If yes, do I need to upgrade my 4 year old receiver to actually hear these signals?

Thanks!

You need HDMI for both.

No, you cannot get TrueHD through an optical cable, you will need HDMI. The receiver will need HDMI ports, and the PS3 will pass the information to the receiver via PCM, which has been decoded internally by the PS3.

No, for TrueHD the PS3 has to handle the decoding since it cannot bitstream the signal to a receiver. As long as you have an HDMI receiver capable of handling PCM you're golden.

1) The gurus will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the answer is "No". You can only stream these audio codecs through HDMI, and not via optical cable, due to HDCP.

Also, the PS3 cannot decode or stream DTS HD (MA), but it can do True HD. There's rumor that the PS3 will get DTS HD software decoding with the Profile 2.0 update... but who knows?

2) For the love of God, yes. Your 4 y/o receiver probably can't handle these audio formats anyhow. You might be able to get a good deal on one now, especially the Onkyo 605, 705 and 805 as all of these just had significant price drops. Pioneer has a phat new receive coming in June, too, for $600, which could possibly trump the Onkyo 805...

You guys are fast! Thanks a bunch!! I pretty much figured that to be the case from some of the other posts I had seen but never found a clear answer. I guess I should start saving and researching for that new receiver.

technology grows like a weed!!!

No. Sony likes to use it on their latest releases, and WB is starting to on some of their newer ones but no, not on all. Disney seems to prefer PCM, as does Lionsgate now, and Fox and New Line use DTS-MA. All of them of course have the lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 option.

Depends. IF you buy one that can INTERNALLY decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA, then you are golden. Or if you happen to have a receiver, like the Onkyo 605, that can decode these, you can also buy a BD player that is capable of Bitstreaming these to the receiver where it is decoded.

Check out the players sections for specs.

No, PCM all the way. The PS3 cannot bitstream any of the HiDef codecs, other than PCM 2.0, which is just CD audio essentially.

So since I am not able to decode these soundtracks, what am I hearing when I select 5.1 True HD on a movie that I watch?
