IGN recently got a hands-on with both the PS3 and 360 versions of GTAIV and wrote a pretty nice 4 page take on the experience. Here's the most eye-catching excerpt:
"For the first time, Rockstar gave us hands-on access to both the PS3 and 360 versions of GTA IV. The good news is that no matter which system you prefer, you're going to have a great-looking game to play. There are only some minor visual differences noticeable between the two preview versions. The 360 build is brighter and has slightly more vibrant color while the PS3 build has less aliasing issues. Both display a solid, consistent framerate even during scenes with heavy pedestrian traffic and wild explosions. While graphics *****s will find subtle differences to nitpick, the average Joe is going to be happy with either version." http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/855/855555p1.html Sounds like it's brightness vs. less aliasing issues, with both playing rock solid. Still, PS3 version FTW ![]() |

Most brightness issues seem to stem from poor calibration on the reviewers part.

Exactly. Especially on IGN, when they post "comparison videos" the PS3 version always looks bleak and washed out. They never look like that on my setup. Regardless, I'd take less aliasing over more brightness any day of the week.

Given almost every comparison review I've read has consistantly complained about the brightness [and color vibrance] issues, I'm left returning to my original query regarding it.
Don't folks realize that different components have different calibration needs? Or am I just delusional? |

IGN is personally my favorite place to get reviews/media for upcoming games. However, they do have a "Plug it in with default settings" method of calibration that irritates me. They don't believe the users should change a single setting

I don't think they really believe that. I beleive a lot of people don't change they settings, they just plug it in and start playing. I think giving a review with default setting is a good idea, so if you change your settings you may enjoy the game more than others.

Their own control becomes a source of bias. Failure to uphold that one control, causes chaos and inconsistancy in their reviews. Conversely, that one control also invalidates their reviews for hardware aside from their control set. It's an ugly situation. |

You can fix the brightness in the TV's menu. You can't do a lot about the aliasing though.

I can ALMOST see not changing TV settings to stay 'unbiased', but built-in system settings that everyone who owns the system has access to? I think the capability of altering those settings should be considered when doing ANY comparison. It shows the PS3 is better designed with more customizability. Game devlopers know that every player has the ability to fine-tune how their games look without the need for TV-specific options.
