Default IGN: PS3 version of GTAIV has less aliasing issues

IGN recently got a hands-on with both the PS3 and 360 versions of GTAIV and wrote a pretty nice 4 page take on the experience. Here's the most eye-catching excerpt:

"For the first time, Rockstar gave us hands-on access to both the PS3 and 360 versions of GTA IV. The good news is that no matter which system you prefer, you're going to have a great-looking game to play. There are only some minor visual differences noticeable between the two preview versions. The 360 build is brighter and has slightly more vibrant color while the PS3 build has less aliasing issues. Both display a solid, consistent framerate even during scenes with heavy pedestrian traffic and wild explosions. While graphics *****s will find subtle differences to nitpick, the average Joe is going to be happy with either version."

Sounds like it's brightness vs. less aliasing issues, with both playing rock solid. Still, PS3 version FTW

Most brightness issues seem to stem from poor calibration on the reviewers part.

Exactly. Especially on IGN, when they post "comparison videos" the PS3 version always looks bleak and washed out. They never look like that on my setup. Regardless, I'd take less aliasing over more brightness any day of the week.

Or, you know, they're just stupid because it's IGN.

Sh*t, I don't care what the critics say, I own a PS3 and I'm going to buy that game. Plus I don't like the Crapbox anyways, their controllers look retarded

Given almost every comparison review I've read has consistantly complained about the brightness [and color vibrance] issues, I'm left returning to my original query regarding it.

Don't folks realize that different components have different calibration needs? Or am I just delusional?

IGN is personally my favorite place to get reviews/media for upcoming games. However, they do have a "Plug it in with default settings" method of calibration that irritates me. They don't believe the users should change a single setting

I don't think they really believe that. I beleive a lot of people don't change they settings, they just plug it in and start playing. I think giving a review with default setting is a good idea, so if you change your settings you may enjoy the game more than others.

It's been a while, but in one of their video reviews they specifically said that the user should never have to change a setting on the system, TV, or otherwise to get the 'correct' view. I wish I could remember which review it was...

It's a fair point, however, well, it leads to some problems.

Their own control becomes a source of bias.

Failure to uphold that one control, causes chaos and inconsistancy in their reviews.

Conversely, that one control also invalidates their reviews for hardware aside from their control set. It's an ugly situation.

You can fix the brightness in the TV's menu. You can't do a lot about the aliasing though.

Pssshhhh . . . whatever. It will obviously look better on PS3 but I bet whatever score IGN rates GTAIV on PS3 will be the same as the 360's lol.

I can ALMOST see not changing TV settings to stay 'unbiased', but built-in system settings that everyone who owns the system has access to? I think the capability of altering those settings should be considered when doing ANY comparison. It shows the PS3 is better designed with more customizability. Game devlopers know that every player has the ability to fine-tune how their games look without the need for TV-specific options.

Default GTA IV to look similar on both platforms

Quote:
Next month, Grand Theft Auto IV releases worldwide on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. The title is pretty much complete with only a bit of polishing left to do before it hits that coveted gold status. Other than that, April 29 cannot get here fast enough.

With the increasing anticipation for the title on both sides, the technical aspects of the game remains a top priority, primarily for PS3 owners who have seen a lot of developers deliver a weaker version of their title for the PS3. With the PS3 version of GTAIV already lacking exclusive downloadable content, the next possible disappointment would be to have a technologically inferior version of the product. Those worries can now be laid to rest as confirmation comes that both the PS3 and 360 versions will run similar to each other at exactly 30FPS. Even with a side by side comparison, there are very little details that show which version is which. The only thing that the PlayStation 3 version lacks is the exclusive episodic content available for the 360, which is something that could hurt the sales of the PS3 installment in the long run.
