Default Your Pick: 2008 Oscars - Best Visual FX

Since this is a Blu-ray message forum, I thought this category would be of particular relevance. Out of the above three nominees for Best Visual Effects at this year's 80th Annual Academy Awards, which visual effects artists do you think are most deserving of the award?

I'm glad that there isn't the bias I thought there would with people picking Pirates because it's Blu. What it comes town to today because all special f/x are plenty believable is what looks more amazing, and Transformers was absolutely impressive.

Five Nominees? I only see three.

The Golden Compass
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Transformers

What are the other two?

Transformers, hands-down.

Simply because one of the biggest challenges in making a 3D model believable is makng sure that it blends perfectly with its surroundings. ILM has done this with flying colors.

What has been acheived in Transformers is - IMO - a milestone in special effects wizardry that has set the bar for movies to come.

Transformers. Pirates is my second choice. The golden compass is pretty good too but it just looks too cartoony, it's been done with Narnia and even in Pirates. Pirates actually does it better in my opinion. Pirates just had too much going on, that ILM just couldn't focus on the little details like the lighting in some scenes. so the textures kinda glowed and didn't match up in a few shots. The blend of effects in transformers was used only when needed not just to make it simpler. I really believed that the Giant F*#@ing robots actually existed. Granted robots are technically easier to make look more realistic because there is less that has to be done to the textures. Not much translucency needs to go into the design and for example Davy Jones' skin texture is VERY difficult to achieve when having the weights being manipulated in the mesh to move more fluidly like the boneless octopus needs to have. ALSO the water effects. So technically Pirates has VERY complex scenes. Transformers is a better blend and since the way Michael Bay shoots, he shoots as much as he can in camera so there is less that needs to be focused on. Example: bone-crusher bashing the bus. Most directors would choose to have a CG bus. That is already more s*&t the animator has to pay attention to in that shot so it wouldn't have looked as real. AND transformers had REALLY complex mechanics going on within the designs. That alone got my vote for Visual effects. It was just amazing.

I vote for Pirates just because there is so much going on special effects wise in almost every scene of that film. And the Maelstrom sequence at the end is breathtaking.

The Golden Compass winning this over Transformers was and still is one of the biggest - if not *the* biggest - travesties in the history of the Visual Effects category.
