Default Theatre Set-Up

First off I don't want this to turn into have you considered these speakers, receiver, etc. I have decided what I want and just want to know if this works.

Alright, this is what I have right now.

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665094051

I was going to replace the speakers with Polk Monitor 50s for the fronts, 30s for surrounds, and the CS1 for the center channel. Then a couple months down the road I am going to get a Onkyo 605 or a Yamaha V663 as well as a SVS or HSU sub.

Well, the receiver I have right now is rated 6 Ohms and the Monitors are 8 Ohms. Is this going to cause an issue? I don't have the money to get it all at once or I would.

If your reciever is rated at 6 ohms, then you can install 6 or 8 ohm speakers, either will be fine with the reciever. Just dont go with speakers any less than 6 ohms. 4 ohm speakers will not have enough resistance and cause the amp in your reciever to overheat, not good. Those speakers you have in mind should be fine.

What price did you get the 30's for? I just saw them at j and r for 99 bucks a pair, I was thinking of picking them up for my system. Let me know how they work out.

I plan on getting them from Amazon for $130. $99 dollars would be a sweet deal.

Does anyone know how to Bi-Wire the 50s? I have never Bi-Wired before and they are capable of it.

I would assume that all receivers are different, but on my receiver, it says to use the Surround Back outputs, and put them on the low freq. inputs of the speakers, and use the front outputs on the high freq. inputs of the speakers. However, for me, that would turn my 7.1 receiver into a 5.1.

So, if you aren't bi-wiring just plug the fronts into the high freq. inputs and be done with it?

Bi-wiring is easy: just remove the straps between the two sets of binding posts, and run two sets of speaker cable to your receiver. Use the same receiver output for both sets of wires.

SOme receivers can be set up for bi-amping. This is much the same as bi-wiring, except the speaker cables are connected to two different sets of binding posts and the receiver must be configured for bi-amping. Bi-amping offers the same advantages of bi-wiring, plus greater header due to the use of separate amps for each frequency range (i.e., bass and treble). In high end audio, tri-amping is not unheard of, but I'm not aware of any receiver than can do that!

How do you fit two runs of 12 gauge wire into one output? Should I use a higher gauge wire?

The speaker should come with plates that connect the two sets of input terminals. Just leave the plates in place and connect to either the high or low inputs.

What is the point of doing it that way? Bi-amping (from a receiver that allows connecting to different sets of binding posts to the same speaker) could have a theoretical advantage but connecting two sets of wire to the same receiver bindings posts is pretty much the same thing as leaving the plate between the binding posts on the speakers (and leaving the plate is much easier and cleaner).

I would suggest to leave the plates on the speakers. In the end if you get a receiver that supports bi-amping try it and see if it makes a difference for you.

So, is there an option for bi-amping on a V663 or 605?

I was researching the V663 lastnight and I downloaded the manual from Yamaha and it doesn't let you.

I'm not sure about the 605, but you can just as easily do what I did.

All you have to do is give a name an e-mail address and set a password and you can download all their manuals. It really helps to do this when you research features; otherwise you are at people's mercy and you will most likely end up listening to some sales dink who will be cycled out by the time you get home and get disappointed because he told you what he thought you wanted to hear.

Happy hunting.

ps - I decided I'm going with the RX-V1800. It does everything and decodes everything and the only features it doesn't have are bluetooth and that new SCENE thing. Judging from the V663 manual though the Scene thing doesn't look all that helpful. I think it is going to be a way to make you buy more yamaha products, as it only seems really useful that way. Other then that it just switches inputs and sound field programs.

Hey everyone. I am looking to purchasing a new receiver at some point that is able to do DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD. Just a question, if my tv is not able to support HDMI 1.3 then is there anything I should worry about when it comes to a new receiver?
