Movies last a lot longer. Most games last at best a few months and you never (or rarely) play them again. And only a rare few games have lasting value.

with video games its something that will last you for sometimes 30 hours to finish a game. with movies its more like something to do to past the time for a couple of hours but as for which one to invest in more is hard to say. i still have games from when i was a kid that are in good condition and that i am still working on

Depends on the game/film. I paid around £30 for Final fantasy XII and the last time I played it I had clocked over 300 hours on it, that I would call good value. Others I haven't played at all (and that includes PS2 and original Xbox games, I'll get around to them at some point
![]() ![]() I'm sure that if you worked out the cost per minutes entertainment, games would probaly come out better than films. |

If value equals cost divided by hours used, then I would say video games have the edge. With the majority of games I own, I have played them more than 2x the hours I have watched any single blu ray. For those making the arguement that games get older quicker and end up unused after some time, I would say you can sell it and get considerable money back.

Neither is an investment, as neither will increase in value enough (mostly not at all) to be worthwhile.
If you're wondering what has a better value, that all depends on who you ask and what the game/movie is. Personally, I have movies that I get more enjoyment out of than many of my games. Also, I have games that I enjoy playing over and over again. I have a game I downloaded free for my PC ("Fruit Armageddon") that I play incessantly and treasure more than games I've paid $50 for. Right now, I'm playing Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga on my 360 and have found few games I enjoy playing more. The difference for me, is that initially I get more hours of enjoyment from a game than I do a movie. Movie is done and over in 2 hours or so, and I only watch 10-20% of the 1200 I own more than once. A game I might play for a month or more before I beat it or get bored of it, but then I never play it again. There are always exceptions, but each person is different. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Goonies, Star Wars, Groundhog Day, Blues Brothers, Evil Dead serises, and a handful of others are films I've watched litterally hundreds of times (and yes I'm being VERY serious and not over exagerating). Few movies make it to that level with me, and honestly I can't think of any game that I've gotten that many hours out of (except old PC games) so it's hard to say. The $50 price tag for a game makes it a harder sell, I'll tell you that. ~Camper |

For me, the two cannot be compared.
Movies, for me, are part of my existence and they are on all the time in my everyday life. If I am home, doing ANYTHING, a movie is on whether I am in the room or not. (although I would turn the screen off if I'm not) Videogames can range from a decent pass time (motor storm) to a religious experience (Final Fantasy X + XII) so when I find a game like that, there are less movies watched on the main system. BUT...if I am playing a game in which I level up a lot and it doesn't require much thought...I'll put a DvD on my computer and have that running in place of the background music. |

Games hands down. Especially the ones with massive online multiplayer components because with that the situation always changes and you get a new experience all the time. If its only single player, I still usually get more hours of fun then a 2 hour movie.
Usually with movies though I only watch once then never again. Unless its exceptionally good and where I'll watch it maybe once a year, or when its on TV and I need to pass time. |

Borat....anyone?
Ok, now onto the issue of games v. movies. Movies are a long term investment. You may only watch them once, you may watch them ten times, however you will do so over months an years. Games on the other hand are a short term investment in terms of time. I spend about 100-200 hours on a game I really enjoy inlcuding RFOM, R6V, COD4, Burnout Paradise, and R6V2. However after 3-6 months I find a new game. For the money a game is a better investment because if you choose wisely, you will get at least 30 hours of play time in a game. That equates to $2 an hour. You would have to watch a movie ten times to get the same return. For me I am more likely to play a video game for 30 hours than to watch a movie ten times. |
