Default HDTV v. Blu-ray

I recently purchased a PS3 mainly for the Blu-ray capabilites but when I popped in x-Men 3 the results were no where near what I expected. Mainly becasue my HD Cable Picture is much better than the Blu-ray picture. I have to believe I am doing somethin wrong. I have a 61" Samsung DLP TV with a maximum resolution of 1080i. The PS3 is hooked up to the TV via HDMI and to a surround sound system via a fiber-optic cable (no HDMI port on the receiver). I think I have the settings right (the PS3 is set to 1080i output) as the games look great but the Blu-ray is very disapponting. Do I have to have a 1080p TV to get a good picture? Help!

i think the ps2 will only play blu-ray at full 1080p not 1080i and in teh event that you don`t a full hd tv i think it down converts it to 480p. but i do not know just go to google and serch it

No, the PS3 does not down-convert to 480 if you don't have 1080p, it looks just fine at 1080i

I too have the same set up with HDMI to the TV, and fibre to the receiver.

One thing to considder is that cable USUALLY broadcasts in 720p... progressive pictures are MUCH more tollerant of action and motion (such as football) By interlacing the 1080p you drop the quality a bit.

And unless you're watching OTA HD is always downresed. Best oyu get is 1440x1080 and for Voom channels on Dish you get 1280x1024. Plus compression it really cranked up.

And even with OTA, you don't necessessarily get 1080i. ABC, FOX and ESPN all use 720p... Somewhere I read that because of the interlacing, the actual picture quality of 1080i is somewhere around 800ish, and when you throw in action scenes, 720p kind of makes more sense (especially for ESPN, with high action sports)
