Confused...
I have a Samsung 1080P hooked to my PS3 via HDMI
When viewing my Blu Rays (Talledega Nights, Crash, Monster House), I feel it is an OK picture.
Not blowing me away.
However, when viewing HD DVD from the 360, it is breathtaking (Corpse Bride)

So Im confused.

I want to support blu ray, but the picture is not impressive.

Im sure its something Im doing.

Question HELP - movies looking grainy and dvd quality

Ok...
So Im all excited to shift to blu ray with my new ps3.
After viewing HD-DVD on the 360, I was pumped to see the quality with my new ps3.

I hooked it all up.
system recognizes 1080p.
put in movie.

SUCKS.

grainy...not mind blowing like the hd-dvd flicks.

Ive tried Talledegha Nights, Monster House, Crash, etc etc
nothing blows me away.

However, Corpse Bride and Kink Kong on HD-DVD are mind blowing.

My TV is the new FULL HD Samsung 40in.
Does anyone know what the best Contrast, Sharpness, etc etc should be?

It all depends on the movie and the transfer from film to disc. If you got the same movie on both formats, they should look identical. Get Ice Age 2, or Crank, and you will be blown away!

You should try the same movie on both platforms. Make it an even test.

Did you go into the display settings on your PS3? If so, you should go into there and see if 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p are all enabled or not. Only 480i is enabled by default.

You may need the firmware update from Samsung which sorts out PQ problems, check out the Samsung thread in the BD players section, you will find lots of help on firmware issues there.

If you think the 360 output is good, you ain't seen nothing yet, the Samsung is a superior player in every way conceivable.

I was the same way when comparing hd dvd vs bd... but when you compare BB or tokyo drift vs anything new you see your going to be dissapointed, plain and simple. Ice age 2 is ok but noticeable compression, but crank is officially the best looking bd to date imo. Film grain is the most noticable issue to me on bd but it is a "taste" to the director, or thats the excuse

Also on the cables comment, as far as I know if you are using digital (HDMI) it either works or it doesnt, not like analog connections where you can get radio interference.

Whoops, not reading properly, hope I don't do that in my mid-term tomorrow!

Then it is a PS3 problem, which I am not qualified to tackle what with not owning a PS3.

Maybe an easy answer here - have you set up the PS3 correctly? It is not set for Hi-Def output out of the box. You have to go to Blu-Ray settings menu and set it up to match your TV - either 1080i or 1080p.

First time I ran T. Nights it looked awful - until I did this.

I just watched Ice Age....wow.
You are right ....very impessive

I changed my system back to HDMI for audio/video....
I have def tech speakers so it would be a shame to not have hd audio.

And I cant tell the difference between 1080p and 1080i.....

By the way, thanks for the education. I almost though an expensive ps3 out the window...

ha ha

Film grain is suppose to be in movies. To not have film grain in a movie is to not have an accurate representation of a movie. A lot of HD DVD movies are over processed to a point where it looks false. If one wants an accurate representation of film, that is with Blu-ray. It depends on taste. I, personally, didn't like my movies to look different than the film does.

Corpse Bride is the exact same transfer ported over to Blu-ray. If you see a difference between HD DVD's Corpse Bride and Blu-ray's Corpse Bride, it is your set-up. Check this first. Let us know what happens.

Talladega has a few decent shots but mostly is very underwhelming, flat looking, smoothed out, not the most detail. Watch Kingdom OF heaven and if you are still disappointed then I agree something is screwy.

But movies like Cars and other digitally animated movies shouldnt have any grain at all, because they can be taken directly from the computer, to the BD. It shouldnt be transferred from film. I really dont understand why all of th BD transfers are from film. They shoot some stuff in digital video tapes, so why dont they just take it from the computer files, rather than the film. The more sources it goes through, the more quality will be lost. If I take a Mini DV tape, and put it onto a VHS, then take that VHS and put it onto another VHS, etc...it will lose quality...but I guess too many movies are still shot using actual film, so that is the original source...so it will usually always have grain.

I don't think it has to be anything wrong with your setup. First of, Crash and Talladega Nights are known for having mediocre transfers and given the fact that it's "only" a 40" screen just those titles might look just like a slight improvement of the SD versions (depending on how far from the screen you are sitting). The smaller the screen, the better SD transmission looks.

It's just like that, some movies are a big improvement from SD and some are not (it all depends on the quality of the master). You have lots of mediocre transfers on both formats and if you want good BD and HD DVD picture you will have to take a look at the reviews and forums before you pick them up. I for one buy all the DVD's I own on BD as well and then sell the DVD's, even if it is just a marginal improvement in some titles it's a huge one in others.
