Default Who owns the rights to Ghost World?

I just re-watched my DVD copy of this film last night, and couldn't believe just how well it still holds up for me. I honestly might even consider it top 10 worthy, all things considered.

I was wondering who currently holds the BD rights to the film, and how likely (or unlikely) is it that this will ever see North American Blu Ray release? I'm unfamiliar with how to figure these sorts of things out myself, and many of you here are far more 'in the know'.

Ghost World still has what it takes to click perfectly with today's 'outsider' youth, especially those of the indie/hipster persuasion. It's quick witted, has an extremely strong cast, and extremely satirical. Also take into account, the current popularity of Scarlett Johansson, and you're looking at quite a bit of sales to be had by releasing this. I'd like to know who has been neglecting to do so.

Thanks in advance guys.

This too is probably one of my favorite movies from the past 15 years. It's one of those movies I can watch over and over and I never get bored or tired of it.

I'm not sure who owns the rights, but the recently released German Blu-ray has been confirmed Region-Free.

^ Thanks for the tip, I may just have to bite eventually. I'll try and keep my patience for as long as possible. Maybe buy the graphic novel instead for now.

Seriously though, Buscemi is so on-point in this film, David Cross' cameo is highly entertaining, and nearly every joke pays off. The film is almost like a live-action version of Daria, and that DVD set sold unexpected gangbusters.

Hopefully this won't be slept on for long.

Doesn't MGM own this? It was released in the US by United Artists.

I like your post but NO. Hipster, horrible hipsters only THINK that they are outsiders but have their heads so far up their own arses that they don't realise that they are a huge part of the very established culture that most true outsiders are against.

You must not understand the significance of single quotation marks.

Also surprised GW isn't on Blu yet - great film that I've seen numerous times over the years.

This is a film that is both extremely funny & also quite sad. The inevitable deterioration of Enid & Rebecca's friendship is difficult to watch, even though you can see this coming as the film progresses. Even though it's been years, I can identify with & remember the uncertainty that comes with graduation from high school/college and how scary that can be. The film definitely captured those feelings & emotions perfectly.

Josh was a great hapless, clueless character; especially funny was his job at the 7-11-type store & the scene when the store owner and that crazed hillbilly started fighting, i.e. "That guy spends more time at the store than I do!" Also, the way Enid & Rebecca alternately condescended & pitied Josh was both pathetic & hilarious - LOL.

Re: Hipsters:

Why did the Hipster burn his mouth? He drank his coffee before it was cool.

MGM owns it. I think the only way it will get a U.S. release is if Kino, Twilight Time, Criterion or Shout Factory license it from MGM.

The German blu-ray released last month is acceptable and has the following extras:
-German Trailer [2:18] (the English dialogue is dubbed in German)
-Behind The Scenes [10:20]
-Thora Birch Interview [2:15]
-Scarlett Johansson Interview [2:45]
-Steve Buscemi Interview [3:10]
-Terry Zwigoff Interview [3:12]
-Bob Balaban And Teri Garr Interview [3:06]
-Illeana Douglas Interview [2:34]

My DVD of Ghost World says that MGM owns the rights. So they own the rights to it.

I re-watched the German blu-ray last night and the English audio is out of sync with the picture in a few scenes. I don't know why I didn't notice it the first time I watched it. I'd skip it and wait until the movie gets another blu-ray release.

ScarJo took off while Birch crashed and burned.

Very odd.

When Crumb and Louie Bluie arrived on the collection, it was reported that Zwigoff said at a Q&A that Criterion was working on it. However, when I met him in person a few months later and asked him, he kind of shrugged. That was way back in November 2012 and I haven't heard anything since.

I guess Birch's father is ultra-controlling in an unhealthy way. I have heard she expressed interest in a number of big roles, only for producers to balk at his excessive demands (as her manager) or he refused to let her do them.
