Default Home Theater in a Box

I purchased my dad a blu-ray player for Christmas knowing that he was about to buy a new HD tv. Well he finally bought the tv about 2 months ago, an Olevia 47" 1080p. He is now looking for a stereo system and is looking to spend around $500. I just recently bought a hd tv as well but haven't had the money to get into the audio aspect as of yet so I haven't been able to be any help. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what he should be buying? He really is pretty adamant about wanting to buy a Home Theater in a Box instead of buying piece by piece. Thanks for any help.

Sony STRDG720 (or even better an Onkyo TX-SR605)

Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System

~$500

demand (by force if necessary) that he not waste the money on an HTIB.

HDMI cables.

There's a world of difference between htib and like a 606 and a decent speaker setup. The price difference is not that much.
