Let's assume the 3:1 (or better) rate of sales for BD vs. HD-DVD continues. What would it take for Universal to support BD? Does anyone have any links as to why they are the only hd-dvd only studio to begin with? I'm very curious as to what the history on this is.

Universal answers to much more than MS. They will not let their disc sales tank for long just to please MS.

I know that we're going to have Star Wars & Gone with the Wind, but it would be nice to have Jurassic Park too. I wish Universal would get on-board.

Found this interesting. Don't know how reliable the site is though.
http://play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/RCS/3-/1...n/Product.html I think this is a company in the UK. |

A combination of poor sales and deteriorating relationship with Toshiba and other lead HDA members.

HD-DVD supporters (not fanatics) and BD supporters will remember Universal for what it was - as the studio that prolonged the format war unnecessarily. fuad |

Universal has some smart people working for them. Knowing clearly that HD-DVD will soon fail due to lack of support from other movie studios. there trying to make as much money as they can with HD-DVD. When it come time to be forced to go the other way, they'll already have many movie ready to be realised in HD. There for making even more money on BD. This is only my theory of the whole thing, theres probaly alot of other politics involed with microsoft and stuff, but in the end there making money with it.

Given the # of titles and # of copies being sold, the HD sales are probably still a drop in the bucket for these studios, I don't buy that they are just squeezing some blood of out of hd-dvd rock.

I think Universal wants to make money, first and foremost. If current trends hold, which I have no reason to believe they won't, then at the very least it would be beyond foolish and crazy for Universal to not at least have discs out for both formats by next Thanksgiving-Christmas time. Even now, they snub BD at their own foolhardiness and peril. BD is only going up from here and I think just about everyone knows it. |

The format will be dead by 08 so why not squeeze another 50 Million out of unsuspecting HD-DVD consumers before the format dies? If I was a greedy as universal I know I would probably do the same thing instead of just ending the format war outright by switching sides. |

I remember a thread similar to this one in the past, and I think the following opinion still holds weight...
Universal right now is still in a position to approach the BDA and garner royalties, licenses, etc. much like Warner did about a year ago. In fact, they may even hold more clout, in that their participation could very well end the format war. However, if Universal waits too long, and in my opinion, it is fast approaching this point, the BDA will see the 3 to 1 ratio widen, without Universal's aid, and simply give them the finger with no royalties involved. C'mon Universal, times a waistin. You better hop on board while there may be royalties still yet to attain. Otherwise, you may very well be left in the dark in this round, with no one else but yourself to blame. |
