Aspect Ratio Question - Blu-ray Forum

I don't know if this was talked about before but, what is the point of aspect ratios? Blu-ray is supposed to be 1080p meaning 1080 lines of pixels progressively scanned. Its weird watching a widescreen movie on a widescreen tv and still have black bars on top and bottom. Any body got any info about this?
