Default Lukewarm HD-DVD deal at Fry's

1. No flaming over the post. It should be bloody clear what this thread is about.
2. Let's not turn this into a format war thread.

*disclaimer: I don't own an HD-DVD player or movies, or intend to. I'm passing this on for members that have both formats or are interested in movie deals.

I was at Fry's this weekend while I was in Indy and every HD-DVD title has been clearanced to $9.99. Add to that the 360 player is $39.99 (though I've seen it cheaper) and there is a potential for some good deals. If you're a Purple Person then you can definitely find some good deals there, especially in some of the movies that aren't really getting upgraded on Blu.

Anyway, as mentioned, I have no interest but thought I'd pass it on. Please don't flame over it.

I always wanted The Fast and the Furious on HD DVD as a trophy.

Maybe now is the time.

There's no point in owning an HD DVD player because all movies are converting to blu-ray. Owning an HD DVD player is only good for a collectible for the ages.

With a name like that I would think you are a little biased... J/K!!

The only reason I can think of (and that I use to justify my purchases) is that the BD release of some HDDVD movies is way far down the line. But then again, I bought Ang Lee's Hulk maybe a week before the announcement that it is coming to BD, so the farther we go the less and less the argument has to stand on.

There was also a $7.99 clearance bin on select titles. I don't remember which ones specifically though.

The Fry's in Plano, TX, had a bunch of them on some tables with 7.99, 9.99, and 11.99 price signs scattered through them. You basically had to take them to the register to find out how much they were.

This thread reminded me...

I should see if I can find my old 8-track player down in the basement.

I'm sure there will be some older movies that were released on HD-DVD that might not see a Blu-Ray release for some time, if ever. And for people with both systems, as was already mentioned, this is a great deal. For many discs, there is no technical difference between the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray release, so you're left with the only difference being $9.99 vs some range from $14.99 to $29.99.

Why someone with both systems would pay more for the same thing, well, that wouldn't make much sense.

Uh, so you can have one collection? So there will be players available for your media in another year? So you can cover up the fact that you picked the losing horse and switched after the fact?

Props to those who get a good deal and enjoy them, but I'm not really sure that Blu-ray.com is the appropriate place for this type of announcement.

For cryin out loud, the war is over and HD DVD is dead. It is a good deal for those of us who own a lonely HD DVD player.

I got into hi-def early and purchased Toshiba's HD-A1 which I now use strictly to upconvert DVD. It's built like a tank and really does a nice job of upconverting DVDs.—slightly better than my beloved PS3. I sold off all my HD DVD software when the writing was on the wall because I wanted to recoup my investment. Luckily I did just that...almost to the penny...

I can't see buying those discs on HD DVD at $9.99 when Universal and Warner titles will be available on Blu-ray for around $15 to $20. I would prefer to spend a few extra bucks knowing my investment will be playable on a variety of equipment in the years to come. However, if Fry's Electronics knocks those prices down another 5 bucks to like $4.99, I just might bite on a few titles that have yet to make it to Blu-ray. My guess is that we will see the final flush around Christmas and the only place you will be able to purchase HD DVD is through garage sales, pawn shops and Ebay. So relax guys buying a few remaining HD DVDs is not a threat to Blu-ray or Blu-ray.com.

By the way, I chatted with a salesperson last weekend when this sale was first advertised. They are moving slow as molasses. So you can expect to see them reduced further at some point soon.

The only problem is when your neighbors call the cops cause they think there is a gang shoot out in you backyard.

At the current price for the XBOX 360 add-on drive at Fry's (and anywhere else that has it that cheap or cheaper), it's not hard to stock up on these drives so that if one goes bad you can plug in another one. They are disposable at that price for me.

Does anyone know if stores still accept HD-DVD trade-ins for a blu-ray player??? The reason why I'm asking is because I have an idea.

I've never even heard of this. Which stores used to do this? And what is your idea? Inquiring minds want to know.

Since HD-DVD crashed and burned back in February, I don't think any stores are excepting them for trade-in anymore.
