No release date yet. But the DVD has never even been anamorphic, so you should probably wait.

It will probably be a while too since Cameron is knee deep in Avatar.

Van Ling at Home Theater Forum has said that HD masters for True Lies and The Abyss are in the can, but both are awaiting approval from Cameron before anything can be done with them. So it'll be until whenever Cameron gets around to it - hopefully he will shortly after the release of Avatar.

no kidding? great news! I loved the Abyss when it came out, and I remember shelling out $100 for the laserdisc version of the extended cut, which made the film so much better.

I can see Fox releasing all three films in a set.

He also said that the master for at least The Abyss was already quite old, so it probably has to be redone all over again.
And to think we could've had The Abyss on Blu-Ray already. Too bad .

Nope. There was plans for a special edition DVD re-release in 2001, and then 9/11 happened and those involved with True Lies felt it best to temporarily halt those plans due to the plane / terrorism connections. Then they just never got around to it again. But supposedly it is something they still plan to do.

I got that too along with the James Bond set with the first 3 movies. There were some really first class laser disc packages.

sometimes i miss those big ole laserdisc sets... at the time there was no comparison. especially when it was the only way to get extended cuts, widescreen, etc.

i sold most of my 300 lds but kept the $100 criterion of "Repulsion", which i guess i wont need too much longer...

Like many other films from our past, "The Abyss" will need "latest technology" restoration with James Cameron's guidance to produce the best Blu Ray disc & it will definitely be worth the wait. A bright side to think about though is that the Blu Ray format is now thought about when movies are made & brought to home video. That means higher quality standards from the beginning which requires no restoration plans when Blu Ray discs are made.

I would just say that certain directors are very particular about how their content gets distributed. Afterall its got their name on it.

What bothers me is that Cameron probably isn't looking over the restoration of Aliens if the above is true. Oh well.

Lol...I just watched this last night on Encore channel. Haven't watched this in ages and I couldn't help but think this deserves some grade A BD restoration treatment!

The extended version is one of the best sci-fi movies of all time. IMHO I practically grew up with this movie. As much as I would like to have this yesterday, I believe it should be remastered VERY carefully. Just imagine the proper sound mix and PQ on a properly done blu. The surround sound potential is off the charts. (Just think deep ocean sounds)

+1

Had the Criterion Repulsion LD myself. Great release of an ever greater movie! We're finally getting this on Blu-ray, so maybe it's time to let go of your baby...?

I believe Van Ling will do a very good job . The old documentary should be included IMHO.
Agree that this is one of the best sci-fi movies ever. I have never even seen the shorter version, the only version the tv station here shows is the director's cut. That's also the only version I watch on DVD.
But since the shorter version is supposed to be crap anyway, I don't really mind that .

The Abyss was the first Cameron movie I got to see in a theater. It's been in my top ten ever since. I really hope Fox does it right and releases the superior extended cut. Of course, I wouldn't complain if they included both versions on one release.

The feature length doc on the DVD also ranks as one of the best making-of docs ever. Hope they port it over.
