Default The Official Blu-ray Disc Victory Thread!

Blu-ray Disc is now the undisputed successor to DVD. The writing has been on the wall for a while, it intensified in the last few days, and now Toshiba has apparently told the media that they're halting production of HD DVD and they will make some sort of decision by the end of next week (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=37357). There is no doubt what that decision will be.

Therefore, right now, at 9:55 AM EST on Saturday, February 16, 2008, by the power vested in me by Reality, I am hereby declaring this format war over and Blu-ray Disc the victor.

So where do we go from here?

A lot of people are obviously still worried about when Paramount and Universal are going to start releasing movies on BD. I think it's time to stop fretting about that. Many of the insiders, saying all they can, have indicated that it's happening in due time. This past week's developments can do nothing but speed up the inevitable. I would not be surprised by announcements late next week or early the following week, after Toshiba ends the format. If not then, no worries, they will come soon enough.

I, for one, will not miss this format war. Aside from commenting on the numbers in the Nielsen threads, I do not plan to mention HD DVD ever again in this forum. It's not worth my time. Anybody living in such denial that they can't accept that Blu-ray has won is also not worth my time, so I will not bother commenting on them either.

What I do plan to do is spend much more time in the other sections of this forums. I have spent a lot of time here worrying about the means to the end: Blu-ray Disc winning the format war. It's now time to focus on the end itself: enjoying movies in high-def in a format that I now know with absolute certainty is sticking around.

As for the big movies that have not been released on BD yet, yes, that's disappointing. But when I look at the list of movies currently on BD, I see a whole bunch of movies that look good that I haven't seen. By the time I get through all of those, I'm sure many of the titles I am interested in will be out on Blu-ray.

In short, Blu-ray has won, and it's time to move forward with it.

I will continue to do what I've done for the most part here.
Hang out in the players section and give some advice. (firmware, etc)
Hang out in the HT sections and BS about the difference between cable color and sound quality.
Check out the movie section to see what is out and recommended.
Look at the hot deals section to save some $$$.

You know regular enthusiast forum stuff.

Yes, now we can get back to normal forum activities such as asking:

The format that we are no longer mentioning has been the source of some very spirited conversations. Some I will miss. Most I won't. Now we're to the point of watching how the general public embraces HD. Most of these people have little to no knowledge of this very spirited (and many times nasty) format war. I really hope that the people who made of the opposing sides can now unite under the umbrella of what brought us into the battle to start with - the love of film and home entertainment. All of us can win now!

Default Summary thoughts, end of the war...

Assuming the news out of Japan and the rumors here in the USA are true, and Toshiba has finally given up, here are a few thoughts...

1.) There is absolutely no reason the BDA ought to do anything to offer assistance to HD-DVD. Before DUD died, it would've made some sense for the BDA to offer trade-ins and other incentives, that isn't the case any longer. Giving money to DUD owners only increases the costs to longtime Blue supporters, all else being equal. I say "screw 'em."

2.) I do think licensing Blu to M$ for a future XBOX add-on makes sense, however. But the licensing should be priced such that it punishes M$. They ought not be making a lot of money off the poor saps who already paid way too much money for that brick. Still, having that population join us would likely increase sales and drive down software costs very quickly.

3.) Universal and Para***** should be forced to crawl back to us, on their knees through 50 yards of broken glass, before we take them back. Particularly Paramount. If they don't offer top quality transfers, the best the format has to offer, I won't touch them. And all you Transformers fans... sorry, I don't get it. OK movie but never what you made it out to be.

4.) Toshiba will probably enter the market with a dual format player soon. Perhaps those "cheap Chinese players" can be retooled with a dual laser format to give them an entry point in the market. They need to make a splash somehow to salvage something going forward. Cheap and dual may be the way they can do this. All I know is they better hide the cutlery at Toshiba HQ as I expect a few execs will be jumping on swords.

5.) How smart does Warner look now? WOW! Just think about it. If they drag their feet and Universal goes first, they're the ones looking desperate at this point. Instead they're the white knights.

6.) With one format, we can expect Lucas to get working.

7.) And LOTR soon too.

8.) I have no bitterness with the DUD folks but I don't have any tolerance for them either. When the format war wasn't decided, I could see their FUD as part of an overall strategy. I didn't like it but understood the tactic. At this point, we here ought to have a 100% zero tolerance for it. They aren't prolonging this war, it's over. Anyone spewing FUD at this point is either pathetic, disillusioned, or angry. They have no right to poison our celebrations here. Report trolls to the mods immediately!

9.) Enjoy the win. Everyone here helped bring this about. Don't turn against each other now that there's no easy outlet for your competitive natures.
