Taiwan Red Cliff [Taiwan Version] Info & Pics

I have gotten both Red Cliff I & II from Taiwan. The following is an FAQ about this release:
What aspect ratio are these movies presented in?
They are both presented in the aspect ratio of 1:78:1 open matte. They are not in the OAR of 2:40:1 like the HK, China, & Japan versions.
So they are full screened?
What this means is that the area masked by the black bars are now visible. None of the image is lost from the HK version, it is actually gained on the top and bottom.
What are the language and subtitle tracks for both?
They both have Mandarin PCM 7.1, DTS-HD MA 7.1, & TrueHD 7.1. The subtitles are Traditional Chinese and English. The subtitles are not Chinese & English at the same time like 20th Century Boys.
Are they Region Free?
Yes.
How is the packaging?
Red Cliff I has a slipcover with Chinese text. The actual coverart on the Blu-ray case is in English. Red Cliff II is the same, except the slipcover is reflective.

I used the following comparison (my own picture vs the one from the review on this site) :
TW:
HK:https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...935&position=7
*Apologies for the crappy picture, but hopefully it shows the difference effectively.

Looks like a Steelbook too. Is it available online anywhere?

Wow! How did you find that one? I mean, all I ever come up with in a google search is the Japanese or Hong Kong versions. And graf1k is right, it *gasp* does look like a steelbook.

It is not a steelbook. It is an amaray with a slipcase. You can get it from JSDVD. You need to make an account with their payment center as well as their site in order to make a successful payment. Took them 3 days to get a copy in stock, and another 3 days via EMS. Pretty good service.

a couple of us were trying to do a group buy a couple months ago from that site for this title at HDD. I have the HK version so most of us were trying to cut the cost of shipping. I emailed them and they never got back to me saying how many discs can we get into an order as to not go over their weight limit for EMS. We didn't know how heavy or how much packing they would use and ordering 3 may push us over the limit to the next EMS tier weight bracket price.

Thanks for the info pertaining to the aspect ration. Most of us suspected since it wasn't released by Mei-Ah it wouldn't have the water mark. I really like the slipcover.

too bad the shipping is way too hard, cost like 18 dollars for shipping alone for the red cliff blu-ray... 28 bucks alone without shipping.

Oh, if you've got something to ask JSDVD, I am glad to help.
I've picked some 10 blu-ray titles from this retailer.

Yikes, that's pretty pricey. Well if anybody can/does organize a group buy, I'd be interested in that depending on cost.

I'm mainly looking to potentially organize a group buy for Red Cliff 2 and want to see how many I can buy before it hits the next tier shipping price.

I'd be all about a red cliff 2 group buy. I got mine from amazon.com for $44 and it had the watermark. Oh well. It's not intrusive is it distracting.

It's not expensive ordering yourself from DDDhouse. That Taiwan site uses EMS so group buys might be an option. But DDDHouse just uses standard air mail and doesn't charge much at all. I ordered the Infernal Affairs trilogy and they only charged me around $5 to ship. Just waiting for the pre-order to pop up at DDDhouse although they are already selling the DVD version for around $8. Will probably order Ip Man along with Red Cliff 2.

I also agree the watermark isn't intrusive at all since it's in the black bars only. I just wanted the Taiwanese version for the slipcase

As far as I can tell, had the TW version been 2:35:1, I believe that the subs would be in the picture.

I have found yet another version of Red Cliff 1. The Mainland China version by Zoke Culture. It is presented in the correct aspect ration, same audio tracks as the HK and TW version, and has English subs (in the black bars). Most importantly, it does not have the watermark.

Sadly, it is Locked to Region C.

Where can you buy it?

Actually I've been thinking about buying the Taiwanese version.

Then why not get it from JSDVD? They still have copies with slipcovers AFAIK.

AnimeOnBlu,

Can you post some pictures of the case (inside case cover, disc cover). Thanks

I'm thinking I might buy Red Cliff TW ver.

It is open-matted to 1:85:1 from its theatrical ratio of 2:35:1. The back of the box claims it to be 2:40:1 but it is an error.

I used the following comparison (my own picture vs the one from the review on this site) :

Pics of the Box:

Gorgeous movie. Great story. I wasn't so bothered by the "incorrect" aspect ratio. Subs were very good. Based of the pics I've seen of the HK version, there seems to be no difference PQ wise other than the TW version shows more of the picture.

Specs are AVC encode, Mandarin 7.1 (PCM/TrueHD/DTS-HD MA).

When it try to checkout, it doesn't show any shipping cost, and I try to shipped to U.S. it link me directly to the bank for payment, but shipping wasn't in there.
