Default New Microsoft Commericals

If you haven't had a chance to check these out you definitely need to. There are two out so far and they are absolutely hilarious.

They've paid Jerry Seinfeld $10 million to star in a handful and the total cost will be $300 million, making it Microsoft's biggest ad campaigns, to combat Macs series of anti-Microsoft commercials.

Check it out:

And so far, most critics and ad columnists have agreed....WHAT THE HECK ARE THESE COMMERCIALS ABOUT????

(MS's attempt at a "soft-sell" being somewhat less pointed to the product's sales-focus message, as, say, Mac's aforementioned series of commercials:
"Shh!...I'm trying to catch college students!"
"Fear of change is the key to customer loyalty!" )

these commercials are brilliant...they have no real point (just like the show seinfeld) and people wil remember them. its clever advertising because you remember it for how pointless yet funny it is

I enjoyed them, not that I'm going to run out and buy microsoft, but I still think they were worth the money. I've talked to a few people about them already, so I guess they are working.

Unfortunately, the key advertisers look for is that if you can actually associate what product attribute is being sold in the ads, it'll help you remember what product was actually being sold....Which is kind of in their business, being salespeople, and all.
(I, er, think it's supposed to be a "Microsoft is part of your life" thingy, by selling Bill Gates as a sort of iconic Col. Sanders, but when the audience has to theorize what the heck they're looking at, that's not a good sign--They still kid the Nissan waterfalls, you know.)

Although most advertisers like to point to Burger King's "Where is Herb?" as an example of ads that fatally lose their sales compass once they get too struck with their own cuteness, a more modern example would be the Geico Cavemen:
Once they got their own ABC sitcom, were they even TALKING about insurance anymore?...And, like, what was the connection to insurance, again?

The only good thing that comes out of these commercials is the one half of a line that Seinfeld delivers... "I have so many cars that I get stuck in my own traffic." Even then, it isn't that funny. Clever, yes. Funny, no.

As for the purpose of the commercials? There is no way in hell that they are going to put up a fight against the creative humour behind the MAC campaign that continually attempts to invoke a "defamation of character" lawsuit from Microsoft.

That's the genius of the Mac ads:
In order for MS to sue for "libel", they would have to prove the truth...
And every frustrated Windows user knows, Apple is digging into geeks' own lore, and going after MS with the Truth.
(And if that's starting to sound like those anti-tobacco public-service-prank jerks, well...yeah, them too.)

Take this Apple ad, for example:
Just a "cutesy" sitcom ad-concept about MS Guy trying yoga, to relax from his problems?--Sure, for a while...
Until Apple fakes with a "cutesy" left and hits them with the real-world "Most angry MS users wonder why they have to suffer for Vista's danged problems" right cross, just at the punchline.

...That's how you gain product-competition territory, and keep product in the public's mind.
<Sean Connery> And THAT'S how you get Capone.

The Mac ads aren't anti-Microsoft.

They're Anti-stupid.

And they're pro-Mac.

These Microsoft ads seem to be anti-funny.

The nice thing about the commercials is that you can watch them, laugh and enjoy them, and still hate M$ at the same time!

i think the commercials are great! they get their message across pretty well! The second one was about connecting people, and of course how MS products can connect people.

As the series goes on more and more details will come out! I am sure that these will be leading up to the launch of windows 7 which is now apparently due out June 2009 according to engadget!

http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/15/w...june-3rd-2009/

these adds make people watch them because they do not know what is happening, and they want to find out what is happening! So the ads are working because they have people talking about them all over the net!

Word of mouth is a powerful tool! " hey have you seen the new Microsoft ad?" yeah the ads are working for MS!

What are you people smoking? These are the worst commercials I have ever seen.. they are not funny in anyway anytime. Everyone I know that has seen them think they are god awful and just bow their head in a silent disgust.

anyone who thinks the apple ad's ripping on microsoft makes anyone buy a mac is clearly delusional. they're funny, and thats about it. and thats all these microsoft ad's are good for, laughs. they dont have to relate to anything. the thing thats going to work is the guru's microsoft is putting in retail stores.

but bravo to both companies, love these commercial's
