Hideaki Anno will join a film team, Higuchi-Gumi led by Director Shinji Higuchi, taking charge of Produce and Screenplay. First draft script has been finished in February 5th, 2019. Anno will fully join the project after finishing his “EVANGELION:3.0+1.0” film.”

Ultraman is, per his official bio, “An alien superhero from Nebula M78.” He first appeared in the ’60s Japanese TV series “Ultraman,” fighting various invading monsters and aliens.

Shin Ultraman will be produced by Toho Co., Khara Inc. and Tsuburaya Productions

Interesting that, after Shin Godzilla, a lot of studios are hiring Anno for their Tokusatsu franchises.

I'm really excited for this. Anno's love for tokusatsu is big, I can't wait to see what he does working with one of the most famous series.

I've liked the three Ultra series I've seen to date (Ultra Q, Ultraman and Ultra Seven) and am eager to explore the franchise further. Anno and Higuchi tend to work well together and I really, really like Shin Godzilla, so I'm looking forward to this.

Really? That's very ... traditional, except for the lack of a color timer.

The setting looks good. Brings to mind the battles with Bemular, Jirass / Kira (not-Godzilla), and proto-Biollante.

The thing is, Anno is not directing this. He only wrote and produce it, unlike Shin Godzilla. This is directed by Higuchi, one of Japan's most terrible directors (just to name a few, he did both Attack on Titans movies).
As a special effects supervisor, he is a legend (he did the Fx for the wonderful 90's Gamera trilogy and also more recently Shin Godzilla). But when it comes to directing, he is the Uwe Boll of Japan. He isn't just bad, he's terrible.
Everything about Shin Ultraman sounds interesting. I just wish Anno was directing. With Higuchi at the helm, there is no way this isn't a total disaster.
Love the design btw. It looks like what if Doug Jones played Ultraman. Really creepy!
