Default Sony 55" (1080i rear projection) vs. new Sammy 58" PN58A (plasma)

I bought my Sony KDF-E55 (1080i slim rear projection) back in 2005 or 2006 and I am wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to the new Samsung 58" plasma (roughly $3,000)?

My Sony is a 1080i rear projection 55", but I need to know if the Sammy plasma will produce that much of a better picture to justify the $3,000 cost.

Thanks for the help!!

not sure why you would spend 3000 on a 58 plasma i got my 52" Sony Bravia 1080P LCD with 120 Hz out the door for under 2300 but in my opinion I had a 720P and my new 1080P looks a million times better since 1080 is true high def

I only ever buy sony and the higher the model the better they look. From what I understand the stores make the most money off of samsung and the least off of sony so they want to sell you samsung. If I was you I would do my home work. But at the end of the day if you like it and you get a kick out of the picture go for it.

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago. I still have my Sony KDF-55XS955 which is a similar model as yours and i loved that tv to death it made crappy sd look good and even tho blu's didn't look as good the better lcd's it did a decent job. I only replaced it cause the screen started showing blue clouding in the corners, so I replaced it with the samsung ln 52a650.

Games, hd programing, and blu's look very very good on the sammy, but I always thought sony did a very good job on those rear projection lcd's. Its really up to you if you think spending the 3k is worth that right now cause the hd stuff will look better but may be you wanna wait till your sony craps out before spending the money just to get a new tv thats 3 years old. This is a pretty hard decesion.
