Hi there! Thanks for looking!
Okay... built my own PC early this year, and am now looking to upgrade to the wonderful world of Blu-ray. Aside from a good blu-ray drive (I'm thinking Sony or Lite-on - any suggestions?), I've gathered that there are other things needed in the machine to make the magic happen. <lol> So... Right now, I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have an Intel Quad core lightly OC'd to 3GHz, and 3GB of RAM. I have a dual-DVI video card (ATI x1950) w/ 256MB of VRAM, an EMU 1212 v2 audio card (192khz, 24 bit). I also have a Dell 24" widescreen flat panel. Um... what other details do you guys need in order to tell me if I'm good to go with Blu? Thanks in advance for all your help! |

The monitor's the only thing up in the air (These model numbers are from memory... so may not be exactly correct). If its an older model (FPW2005 or prior) then it doesn't support HDCP over DVI and you would need to use VGA cabling to send the signal. If its a newer model (FPW2007 or newer) then the monitor accepts HDCP over DVI, and you're good to go.
Other than that, you'll be fine. As for drive, either the Sony or Lite-on reader (I'm assuming you're looking at the read-only drives based on the two brands you mentioned) should be fine. The Lite-on is faster and cheaper (check out NewEgg), but I know one person who got one who ended up with a problem with the drive several months later. Still, that could easily be a fluke, and I haven't heard of widespread problems with either drive. Good luck. |

Ah! Good to know! Yes, this is an older FPW2405. The max resolution I can get is 1980 x 1200, which is Blu-ray spec, but it's interesting that it won't accept the 1080p signal over its DVI connection. Er... I think I understood you answer correctly, yes?
