Sweden Hamlet | starring Noomi Rapace

Quote:
Noomi Rapace will lead cast in a gender-swapped adaptation of Hamlet from filmmaker Ali Abbasi.

The film will reunite Abbasi with The Wife and Melancholia outfit Meta Film after they produced the director’s Oscar-nominated Cannes 2018 hit Border.

Iceland’s Sjón (The Northman) is writing the project, with Stine Meldgaard Madsen (Borgen) producing for Meta Film. The film will be produced in collaboration with Boom Films, with principal photography scheduled for autumn 2021.

Swedish-Danish-Iranian filmmaker Abbasi said: “Shakespeare stole the Hamlet story from us. Now it’s our turn to claim it back and make a version so insane and so bloody that make him turn in his grave. Let’s make Hamlet great again!” [+]

I'm always up for a new adaptation of Hamlet. It's one of my favorite plays.

It’s based on a short story by the same author as Let The Right One In so it has a similar sort of twist on fairytale and fantasy, it has some fairly interesting bits and pieces to it (), I’m sure people who’ve seen it know what I mean.

Glad to see her in a great role again. It's been a long while.

Is every story that had a straight white male lead to be remade with a new actor who is queer/black/female? Whose agenda is this and what is their motive?

I'd take this over yet another traditional adaptation.

Right. There has a been a Robin Hood script floating around for years, that reverses the roles. Yet they made two movies in a row with the same theme.

Sarah Bernhardt performed Hamlet in a very well received production in 1899 sir you’re a little lat error the getting triggered and crying about a woman playing the role of Hamlet.

Is this in English and with Shakespeare's dialog or just vaguely inspired by the plot?

After seeing Abbasi's Border, which I loved. And after ordering his debut Shelley, I'm looking forward to this. Naysayers can get on their tiny pedestal and complain. But it's Rapace...how could you not want this? Plus the director will most likely provide his style and skill to it.
Sadly I'm sure it's a bit away since Ali Abbasi is in Calgary filming a Last of Us episode.

Sounds interesting, I've always liked Noomi
My favorite adaptions:
1. GIBSON
2. HAWKE
3 TENNANT
I think Timothee Chalamet would make an excellent Hamlet. The character should be a youth, the personality in context of the material lends itself to the passions of youth.

In the play, during the “poor Yorick” scene, he mentions being late 20’s. So I always have some issues with actors in their 40’s playing the role, not enough to not watch of course. I’m glad another person likes the Hawks adaptation!
