Default Blu-ray PC Player vs. Actual Blu-ray Player

Im running a computer like this:
quad core 2.83ghz
8 gigs ram
hd radeon 4850 graphics card
64 bit OS

I'm sure its fast enough but I want to know which one would be better and why? An expensive blu-ray player or a powerhouse computer that has a blu ray reader?

Depends on what you want. If you just want an easy to use Blu-ray player, a hardware player is what you want. However, if you want to be able to watch Blu-ray on your computer with loads of different options and essentially limitless upgradability(at a cost), then on your computer might be better.

If you want the full version Blu-ray software, you should factor that into the price too, as the drives often come with older software lacking features of the newest full version. The full version of PowerDVD 8 Ultra is US$99.95 at the moment.

ArcSoft TMT - $69.99

http://www.arcsoft.com/products/totalmediatheatre/

With a PC, you can opt for the BD burner drive instead of just a player.
As blank media prices keep dropping, it becomes more and more appealing.

Arguments can be made for either, I prefer PC.

By the way, I need a new computer because I'm predicting my current one is going to break down sometime this year. I wanna buy a computer with a blu-ray reader or whatever you call them. Anyone know of any deals going on?

I don't think it's there for laptops (at least I haven't seen in yet)and it's still pretty new (slow and expensive) for desktops so that makes the chance even smaller I guess.
And if it'd be there for laptops I'm pretty sure you gotta have a very nice budget for one

Ok well let me ask does it matter if you have an expensive blu ray reader in your computer? Graphics card upgrade? I know it will run it smoother but i'm talking about quality of the picture

I have a ~3 year old BD laptop - VGN-AR190G. The first BD laptop sold in The United States(June 2006)
This BD laptop is 1 year old - VGN-AR730E/B.

Slow?
You can get 6x BD Burners nearly anywhere for desktops, 2-4x and drives in laptops.

Budget? $1000 - $1500 will get you a Sony laptop with a BD drive.
Some others can probably be found for less.

nVidia 7600 GT in my AR190G - no offloading. Picture is perfect but processor does all the work.

nVidia 8400 GT in (this) my AR730E/B offloads processing from CPU - picture is perfect.

Depending on the machine's display, you can even watch in Full HD 1080. My AR190G has a 1920x1200 display. Yeah, you can see the clarity!

Or... HDMI out to your HDTV.

A standalone blu-ray player has a better picture I think. I was swapping between my Samsung player and this laptop (on a 42" 1080p), and samsung was better. With the laptop you could see jagged edges.

It might just be my TV, but I prefer my PC for Bluray PQ over my stand alone player. However I can't get multichannel lossless audio on my PC.
