Default Netflix recommendations are a little screwy...

We had seen the commercial for Kitt Kitredge coming out on disc, and my wife thought it looked like a good title to rent for our daughters. Bear in mind, this is a G rated film.

So, I hopped onto Netflix, and added it to my cue. A pop up window came up showing I had added the film, and had a listing of other “similar” movies, including Nancy Drew, The Secret Garden, Donnie Brasco, Casino and American Psycho.

“What the….American Psycho?!?!” I quickly found the “contact us” link only to discover you can’t send just a good ‘ole email asking for an explanation of why American Psycho is likened to a G rated film. To contact them, you have to call. Guess they’re afraid of being inundated with emails from their customers, but paying for incoming “toll free” calls is OK.

Any better luck with Blockbuster mail rentals?

Could be from common actors or directors?

Hmm, according to the listing, these movies are “similar” and made no reference to common actors or directors.

Suspect it was simply computer-generated IMDB connections (could it have possibly been "American Psycho 2: An American Girl", by any chance?)--
Although can't dig up the actor/actress "Donnie Brasco" connection yet...Was Kevin Bacon in it?
(For the record, the Netflix page recommendations now show "Princess Diaries", "Spirit: Stallion" and "Education of Little Tree", and no mention of "Casino".)

FWIW, just sat through KK:AAG on an airline flight over the weekend, and it's a surprisingly intelligent and laid-back matinee for the kiddie-winkies--
We get "wacky burglars" in the last half, but the first half is a fairly well-made 30's-period atmosphere piece with Nancy Drew ambitions.
(And closer in spirit than Nancy's own movie had a year before.)

What are you upset about? It was a computer glitch, probably caused by keywords and/or tags. It's not like they're going to send you American Psycho if your original film is not available. Did the "suggestion" make a negative impression on your child's life? Get real.

BTW, "close the markets" is your proposal to fix the economy? *laughing up a storm*

Yeah I fail to see what the big deal is here. I mean its not like you ordered KK and got AP instead. I would say 3/4 of the time I add a movie to my queue I never even notice what they recommend to go with that movie. I just close the window.

Is this just another thread to bash netflix for no good reason?

Your reply would hold more water if you had quoted the right poster

No, just something I found to be odd. I’ll be sure to run all my ideas by you before posting them in the future.

You do realise that as soon as you get off the phone with a netflix associate, they are going to turn to their co-worker and say "You won't believe the phone call I just got from some d**khead about his recommondations"

I did quote the right poster--you.

You have upset members because you are acting irrational. I mean, really, look at the series of events:
  1. You add Kitt Kitredge to your queue.
  2. You notice the computer recommend you a few R-rated movies.
  3. You "quickly" find the Contact Us link to ask for an explanation as to why American Psycho showed up--a explanation from a customer service employee, not the engineer who created the website.
  4. You theorize the company is "afraid of being inundated with emails from their customers".
  5. You are still so upset, you come to Blu-Ray.com and tell us all about your rough experience.
  6. Then, you have the nerve to ask if BlockBuster's computer generation program is any better--implying that you'd switch services because of this mishap.

I hope this made it clear.
