Question Speaker Wire, Power and HDMI placement

Hello,

I am installing speaker wires and HDMI cables. My understanding is that the HDMI cables should not be placed along side of the power because of interference issues. I read somewhere that they should be about 14 inches apart if they are placed along side of each other.

Is there a "rule of thumb" for speaker wire? Is it bad to have the speaker wire next to the power wires? Because of the wall configuration, I may need to place the speaker wires next to -or- close to the power wires.

Thanks - all opinions welcome.

Scott

It should be fine. I have all my wires jumbled on top of each other.

For best results, you want to keep cables carrying high power signals away from low power cables. If they must meet, try to cross them at right angles.

Richteer has it right. Right angles will give the least amount of interference because the speaker wire will be close to the power cord for a for short time. Running them parallel would give the worst results. Some people are lucky and don't notice any problems, some of us do.

Interesting, didn't know this. I'll try to see if I can apply it.

Thanks to everyone for the response. Especially to crackinhedz who provided us with the picture - I did see some right angles.

I called the local Home Theater store near my house, Century Stereo, and they told me to try to have at least 18 inches between the power cables and the speaker / hdmi cables. Also, they said right angles are helpful when crossing.

I once found the most AWESOME thing on sale for $1 at an auto parts store. They only had one left. It was velcro zip ties. They had a hole in the end to thread the other end through to tighten, and it was velcro so they were removable and reusable. I wish I could find more.

I used zip strips on my computer when I redid most of those wires. Zip em up and cut the ends off and it looked great. Was also good when I moved, just unplug everything and it's already neatly packaged up. Wasn't too worried about re-usability because I didn't plan to ever undo them, most of the cables were re-usable with anything I expanded.

Just make sure both ends are labeled before you disconnect them.
