Direct TV is for TV. If you wanna view TV in HD, you will need an HD Terminal and an HD TV.

Blu-Ray is for movies,tv shows, concerts and some games that are on PS3!

So, you will need just a Blu-Ray player. You can get a ps3, Samsung player, LG, Sony player . Try your local electronic stores like Bestbuy, Target, Costco etc..

if you need a new DVD player then I would say go with BD especially if you buy movies.

As for the question.

If your TV is old and standard definition then it won't be able to show an HD picture. But you will still benefit from a better picture and better sound by watching a BD instead of DVD, but the difference in image quality won't be as great, on the other hand if you buy movies you can buy them on BD and when you do upgrade the TV you will have the BDs already

As for Direct T.V. that has nothing to do with movies on disk. If you have a SD TV then stick with what you have (why pay more if it does not help) if you have an HD TV then HD direct TV and an HD package will mean that you get better images (the package will have HD and SD channels, the SD channels will be the same they are now, but some of the shows might also play on the HD channels and if you watch those instead they should look better.
