Default Blu-ray question fom a newbie...

Greetings everyone!

I have the following HDTV - [URL="http://reviews.cnet.com/direct-view-tvs-crt/samsung-tx-r3265/4507-6481_7-31479287.html?tag=mncol;psum"]

It is an older model HDTV with no HDMI connection. If I connect a Blu-ray player to my tv by way of component cables, will I get resolution of 1080?

The tech guys at the big box stores say the maximum resolution I will get from component cables is 720. I'm confused. Can somebody help me with this? Thanks in advance.

Yes, component cables can give you 1080 resolution.

Here's an audio tip if the box simply says dolby digital 5.1 consider waiting til it says pcm, dolby true hd or dts master audio. Why,simple do you really want pristene video with standard dvd audio dumped on the disc. I prefer dts ma,dthd
and pcm in that order. Even if you don't have the reciever for it yet when you do there's no need to double dip for better audio later.

Paramount/dreamworks and warner/new line are terrible with this while lionsgate,universial,disney-putting dtshdma on wall-e and other recent titles
and others use dts hdma.

I've always been a dts fan and don't care about extra's whatsoever.

Just my 2 cents but i don't like 50% done products.

Folks need to look at his set. It is only capable of displaying 720p/1080i, not that this is bad. You'll still get an excellent picture from blu-ray, but you will not get 1080p.

Default Hate to bring bad news guys but

His tv does do 720p and 1080i resolution. However it will only do 720/1080i on component cable only when it is tv broadcast(DirectTV,Cable, Dishnetwork,ATTUverse etc) As for bluray player it will still get an awesome picture because your getting the most color your tv can handle from bluray. However it will never do 720p/1080p without an hdmi cable (only because of HDCP ecryptian) put into every upconvert dvd/bluray player.
Incase your wondering what it stands for its (High definition copyright protection) So there has to be a digital hand shake between tv and said dvd/bluray player to get hidef pic which is what the hdmi is for.
I did the same on my set and finally figured it out after getting a new tv with hdmi for my bluray player.

Wrong. There are very few sets that will accept 1080p over component, but component will handle it. Moot point for the OP, though.

False.

Component video is capable of carrying signals such as 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, although many TVs do not support 1080p through component video.

Dude....just....no.....

The resolution of the TV determines the resolution it can display. Where are you getting your information? His set is most likely YYYY x 768 pixels. It will accept 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i signals (from ANY source) through component. It will then take that signal, deinterlace it (if an interlaced signal) and scale it to the set's native resolution (probably 768p). His set will NEVER display 1080p because it is physically impossible to do so. From the set's specs, it will also NOT accept a 1080p signal, so the OP will need to feed it either 720p or 1080i. I'd test both to see which device (TV or PS3) has the better deinterlacer.

Absolutely correct. A good example of this is my Sony xbr2 lcd 1080p. It will only do 1080p over HDMI. It says so in the manual. Although some sets will do 1080p over component cables.

You will still get the 1080i like someone else stated. I had the same thing almost 2 years ago when I went to Blu-ray and HDMI and a 3rd LCD TV. Component upto 1080i and HDMI to 1080p..
