I did some searches in this forum, could not find anything really relavant for my question, hopefully this should spark some really good conversation.
Blu-ray has taken off like a shot, I love my PS3, however I want a second blu-ray player so I can use the PS3 strictly for games. I did some research on this wiki located here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc I then took a read on the Wiki on the Quad Layer blu-ray discs located here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray...ng_development So the question comes to mind If you were going to buy a blu-ray disc player would you buy a bargain blu-ray disc now and perhaps wait for the cream of the crop? What would be the timeline for 100GB blu-ray discs to be avail? is it worth buying a cream of the crop BD player now? What are your thoughts? |

Why do you want to your PS3 just for games? It is one of the best blu-ray players out there. If you were looking for another unit for another room, that would be the only reason I could think of.
As for when 100GB will be released, I think it will be a while if ever. Considering they are trying to get blu-ray out into the spot light now, why would they make it to where current bluray player owners would have to repurchase their players if ever? You can fit 9 hours of HD video on a Bluray... thats plenty of infomation for any standard 2-3 hour film, with extras, and extra audio options. Your still doing good. Add an extra disc for more extras and your going crazy. ![]() The only thing I see 100gb might be used for is data storage, unless they figure out a way to make it playable on current players. |

This is one of the main reasons
Back in 1981 this was stated INTERVIEWER I read in a newspaper that in 1981 you said, “640K of memory should be enough for anybody.” What did you mean when you said this? BILL GATES: I’ve said some stupid things and some wrong things, but not that. No one involved in computers would ever say that a certain amount of memory is enough for all time. (…) We at Microsoft disagreed. We knew that even 16-bit computers, which had 640K of available address space, would be adequate for only four or five years. When technology does come in I am thinking may 5 years or so. 100GB may come out I just thought this maybe an interesting conversation |

The PS3 is one of the best Bluray players out there so I don't see the need for another player. But if I wanted to get a stand-alone player my selection criteria would be a player with Profiles 2.0 (BD Live) available and of course the whole range of sounds decoders. Such players are still out of price last time I checked.

So from what I am understanding is that there is NO CHANCE by 2010 that 100GB BD will be avail for movies?
I am bringing up this question because there are pieces of hardware that are already using 36 bit color technology, as we all know BD is as of right now using only 24 bit color technology. For example the Mitsubishi LCD's and the new Classe SSP 800 more eye candy = more data In the Wiki it also states that SOME of the players will be able to read a quad layer disc. Anyone have any Idea what players they are referring to? |
