Default Blu-ray / HD-DVD Question

ok, i was wondering why people that have a hd-dvd movie trade up to blu-ray. i have a machine that plays both so i've been buying hd-dvd's like mad since alot are cheaper and not on blu-ray. i guess i don't see the point in swapping to blu since the quality is the same.

any thoughts?

I can think of two reasons:

1. Some blu's that are also available on HD-DVD have been optimized for blu-ray and are improvements over the hd-dvd version, while others are direct ports.

2. They plan on buying multiple blu-ray players and want to be able to watch their movies on all players, while HD-DVD players will become more and more scarce(if they aren't already)

Moneywise your reasoning is good.

But some day if your player dies you may need to rebuy all those movies on Blu-ray format. But who knows, by then we may be onto some entirely new format.

The only other advantage I can think of for standardizing on Blu-ray is so that you can lend out movies to friends. But I tend not to like to lend stuff out since some people hang onto it forever.

Does your collection also include LaserDisc and Beta movies. Seriously, what is the point of this thread. In a free economy consumers are allowed to buy goods and services. Your particular good of interest is HD DVD.

I think the real question is why is it in the Blu-Ray Movies and Releases thread.

While the quality is the same or very close on many titles, there will be no new HD DVDs. They stopped several months ago (August i think),
Reasons not to buy HD DVD...

In the future, there will be lots of Blu-ray players, but if your HD DVD player breaks, you are out of luck.
Better audio, while not all Blu-rays have better audio than HD DVD, most of them do support higher quality audio, mainly due to the increased capacity.
Interactivity, while both sport online interactions, many HD DVD online servers has been shut down and more will stop being supported.
Price. For now, HD DVD is cheaper while companies try to clear out their left over inventory, but later on, with the increased number of Blu-ray discs coming out, the collector aspect of HD DVD could bring the price up among collectors.
The newer Blu-ray discs are using more of the disc space since the studios no longer have to limit the size to 30GB to accommodate HD DVD (why make 2 encodes when you can make one?), resulting in higher quality and more extras.

So for now you can go ahead and buy HD DVD, since it is cheaper. You might be lucky enough to see the value of the discs rise among collectors, but you should consider the future that Blu-ray has.

You may 'save' money by buying those HD-DVDs that are on clearance....but you may also be buying an inferior product. a 30gb HD-DVD or a 50gb Blu-ray. Gee...I wonder which will have the better quality and features......

Also, as was said, once your player dies you are screwed. Likewise you are screwed if you want to watch those HD-DVDs in other rooms.

This soo should be in off-topic. This is gonna be a blood bath.

Not everyone has a player that plays both, so maybe they don't want to have to bother having to plug the hd dvd player in to play a hd dvd and then have to plug the Blu-ray player back in to play a blu-ray. They probably don't want to buy hd-dvds (unless they're ultra cheap) since when their hd dvd player breaks they won't be able to play them at all.

If you have an xbox, stock up while they're cheap!

I never bought into HDDVD, went blu at the PS3 launch, never looked back. Buying HD-DVD's is like someone buying betamax when VHS was the clear winner. You'll end up with a collection sure, but limited in offerings.

It's your coin, just weigh the options before you plunge.

You only have one player capable of playing DVDs as well???? or are you like every other house-hold in America, and own about 4 players (I think I have 8 players capable of playing DVDs including laptop, Car, HD DVD player, Blu-ray player, etc)

See.... eventually you'll want one for the other room.... right now you may have one HD TV, but it's like anything else..... The average house has 3 television, soon the average house will have 3 HDTVs

my question was geared towards those that have an hd-dvd player and a blu-ray player or a machine that plays both. i don't see why if someone has a movie on hd why they would turn around and buy it on bd. i'm not saying i buy hd over bd, that's not the case. as i have far more bd's than i do hd's.

Many times the Audio on Blu-ray is far superior than the HD DVD version.

I have triple dipped from DVD > HD DVD > Blu-ray

and also I know the HD DVDs will be obsolete when my player breaks
