Default Universal making business sense...

I've read a lot about how Universal is making a mistake by being the only major studio to be HD-DVD only - that they are missing out on lots of Blu-Ray sales and prolonging a format war.

However, maybe this is a good business model. Put your product out on HD-DVD only - get the HD-DVD supports to buy them up. HD-DVD folds - then you get to re-release all your titles on Blu-Ray. Now many of the previous HD-DVD supporters will 're-buy' the title in Blu-Ray - you've essentially sold a movie from your catalog twice.

I don't think that would really change the dynamics of the double-dip. Most would keep using the HD DVD until their Tosh dies or a better version comes out on BD.

Why would they re-buy it if they still have a working HD-DVD player? They'll just buy all new releases on BD.

Because they would want one less component in their home theater system - I know I would. Didn't Beta owners eventually switch everything over to VHS?

Plus - HD-DVD supporters can't be too smart anyway since they aren't in the Blue-Ray camp

Me, too! I thought I was the only one remaining in the world! I still own 40 LDs that were never released on DVD. They deliver quite a nice, definitely watchable PQ even on a big screen when upscaled!

I agree with akadkins. Not too long ago I attended the HD Summit in Hollywood, CA where a few studio executives were talking about HD technology in general. And how different formats or editions of the same program are a good thing for the studio, so they can sell the same product over and over.

Universal has had several problems with Sony Studios thru the years. I think it goes a little deeper than money. I don't think they want anything to do with anything related to Sony.

I remember reading an article awhile back where a Universal rep said they would quit releasing HD movies before they would release them on Blu-ray.

I remember thinking at the time boy they must really have a beef with Sony since they're both studios or something that runs really deep.
