I found the memoir by John Callahan at the Dollar Tree a few weeks ago. Its a short book and it was well worth the $1. I highly recommend it. As for the film, I watched it on Amazon Prime and it was time worth spent too. Joaquin Phoenix is superb as always. The film has many sweet and moving moments. Gus Van Sant directs the film using a non linear approach and some interesting scrolling shots I can't remember ever seeing in a film before. Jonah Hill is also really good in the film, especially in a particular scene where he really becomes vulnerable. I would recommend watching!

Picked up the French release that was put out by Metropolitan, ironically I ordered it from Amazon. French subtitles are optional, though only on the main feature and not on the extras.
The biggest exclusive extra on here is an interview with Van Sant and Phoenix, running 7:41. Making Of runs 5:39, Adaptation runs 4:47, Dexter runs 3:53, La Maison de Donnie [Donnie’s House] runs 6:03, John Callahan runs 4:41 and Santina runs 3:46. The disc also includes Bandes-Annonces [Trailers] for other films: Stronger, Last Flag Flying, A la mervier [To the Wonder] and Le musée des merveilles [Wonderstruck]. The featurettes but not the interview are also on the Scandinavian Blu-ray released by Scanbox. |
