Default 1440p in the near future?

Is this going to happen or what? I can't really see how much better you can get than 1080p...maybe for projectors but still.

Does anyone know if this will come out soon and replace 1080p? I don't want to invest in a set and have it replaced within a year or so =P

You're safe to purchase, don't sweat it. I'm sure that the CE manufacturers, studios and retailers are all very well aware that pushing another leap in specs any time soon would be suicide.

1080p will rule for quite a while.

Ok let's look at 1440p practicality. To see any difference at that level you will need a TV of 60 inches or more and have to sit almost in front of the screen.

Even then the difference will be slim to none. Given the human eye can't see very much after 1080p.

Also make sure you have a bowl for puking in.

Yes, there is not 1440p sources coming any time soon, other than a computer(Unless they add another layer to blu-ray because most players right now can read 4, and put it on that, which I don't see happening)
If you are looking for something future proof, you could by a 1600p monitor (only 30" are available).

1080p will be around for quite some time yet, as it does it's job keeping current and all previous films' source material intact.

To upgrade the studios will have to dish out many many thousands of dollars (millions probably) on new cameras, computers and software to record/encode/render this resolution.

Besides, why would there be 1440p? The technology for 2160p and 4320p are already emerging! It's just so freakin' expensive and in experimental/testing stages... but just wait 10 years for BluRay 1080p to run it's course, just like DVD (10 years of popularity over the older format)

Don't Believe me? Go ahead and wikipedia these entries...

2160p is called Quad Full High Definition - 3840 x 2160
4320p is called Super Hi-Vision Television - 7,680 × 4,320

and look at this resolution chart! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:UHDV.svg

love you!

I would like the next generation home media format to be able to handle 2K, 4K and 8K with 24p, 30p, 60p. Also 3D. I know Red say they have a 20+K camera, but i don't see any point after 8K. That's already about 32 megapixels! I think 1080p Blu-ray will be the home media standard for a while.
