Default What Does Everyone Think???

So here is a picture of what I built my wife for Xmas. What do you all think???

I know it's not home theater related but I'm pretty proud of this. This is the 1st thing I've tried to build like this!!! Gives me a little boost of confidence for when I start the work on my basement home theater and bar.

All real wood and no pressed board right? If so I'm very impressed.

What you do in the privacy of your own home is none of our business, lol.

Juvenile, yes. But I couldn't resist.

all real wood from fleet farm!! it was in length's of 2-4 feet. none of it was wide enough so i had to put a spine in to make 2 boards wide enough for the tops, bottoms, and sides of the fireplace and bookshelves.

my father in law has a shop w/the tools and had a stroke about 4-5 months ago. so he was out there watching and gave me hints here and there, other than than, it's all my work.

The molding at the top is the nicest part. Can you post a closeup of the detail?

Nice work. Especially for a 1st timer. I really liked that you used solid wood and not plywood+veneer. It's a little more work, but worth it in the end.

my wife has a serious issue with "fake" wood. there was no other way i could've done it if i wanted to. this whole project i kept telling her to tell me what she wants b/c if she doesn't like it i have to listen to her complain about it for as long as we have it.

this was what we gave to each other for Xmas, but she gets more out of it than i do. i personally think i'm getting screwed this Xmas, but what u gonna do??

Still takes skill to make everything seamless and great looking. Looks better than a lot of store bought items I've seen.

That's not a bad thing to get from your wife.

It looks like something I saw on a t.v. ad over the weekend.... an "Amish built electric fireplace" (yeah, Ironic eh???) anyways, the amish make the cabinet, and they pop a fireplace into it.... it didn't have the storage/bookcases on the sides though......

My father is a pretty accomplished woodworker.... he's slowed some in his old age, but he's made a LOT that was darn impressive, and I'm thinking about "Taking up the hobby" when I finally move into my new home.... I'm going to turn the entire basement into a workshop area..... Hopefully I can create something like you did, and not lose any appendages in the process.

i saw the same thing on a commercial this weekend too!!! crazy. i was impressed by 2 things while making this: 1: i also didn't loose any fingers or suffer any major cuts and 2: it has stayed together so far. u turn the main fireplace around, all you see is the bronze screw heads holding it together.

she's seen it. there was no way i was gonna tackle something like this w/o her input. if i didn't make it the right height or width, i'd never hear the end of it.

she wanted it done by the day after thanksgiving so we could decorate the house. started it 2 weeks ago and worked on it after work everynight and put the final coat if finish on before we left for thanksgiving on thursday. got it done just in time.
