Default PS3/Blu-Ray + Standard DVD of Star Wars & Upscaling

Alright, so I got caught up this past Black Friday in the all the PS3/Blu-Ray hoopla. I was debating on whether or not to get a standalone player, or the PS3 w/ Blu-Ray built in, and figured for the money might as well go with the PS3.

I received a free copy of 007 Casino Royale with my PS3 (haven't watched it yet). I also bought The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray yesterday morning (I pre-ordered mine, as all the copies in the store were gone when I got there, but mine was sitting on a shelf reserved just for me in the back).

So last night, I finally watched a Blu-Ray movie on my PS3, watched The Dark Knight. Movie rocked, and the picture and audio was stunning. I was impressed.

Now tonight, since I have about 500 Standard DVD's, I decided to check out how well the PS3's Blu-Ray player upscaled Standard DVD's. Adjusted all my video settings to the proper modes, had my tv in the proper resolution, and I decided to pop in a digitally remastered version of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Now this came out of the Trilogy Box that is Bronze.

So I'm watching the movie, got the surround sound going good and loud, and I'm trying really hard to tell the difference if I were watching it on a regular dvd player, or if it was being played on the PS3 and being upscaled.

I was very disappointed. I didn't notice a whole lot of "upscaling" so to speak. The digitally created scenes, you could tell were upscaled to hi-definition, but the scenes that are shot with film, were very grainy, and being how Lucas had the film digitally remastered, and did not really look like they were being upscaled to high definition. So I messed with the PS3's video settings during the movie, but couldn't get any better picture, so then I played with the tv and I couldn't get any better picture either.

On Empire Strikes Back, where Luke is in the swamp on the Dagobah, that whole scene was so grainy and terrible, as was most of the saber fight with Vader in the Carbon Freezing room. I did notice some of the more well lit scenes, you could notice upscaling...but hazy scenes, or ones that weren't well lit were very grainy and I wasn't too happy with the quality.

Just curious to hear some of your guys feedback on the upscaling feature on the PS3 Blu-Ray player when playing and upscaling Standard DVD's.

what did you guys notice? maybe I just picked a movie that was a tad bit too old. I dunno. Just not all that impressed. I love the Blu-Ray player...it's awesome, I'd just rather not go out and replace 500+ Standard DVD's with Blu Ray format versions (although I'm quite sure I will definitely be replacing the Star Wars Collection with Blu-Ray Format Discs once they become available.).
