Default PS3 power consumption

A co-worker told me that the PS3 uses up to 7 x's the electricity of a stand alone Blu-Ray player. Any truth to this statement??

no - 200 watts for running BD would be the tops... Playing games probably more i bet..

Edit - Well sh*t, if some bluray players are only using 25 watts, then yea, hahahah.

Article from CNET -Six reasons you shouldn't use the PS3 as your Blu-ray player
"5. You want to be green.
The PS3 is great at a lot of things, but conserving power isn't one of them. If you're looking to stay green and limit your power consumption, you'll be much better off using a standalone Blu-ray player. For example, the PS3 sucks up about 170 watts while playing a Blu-ray movie, while the Samsung BD-P1400 only uses about 25 watts. That's a fairly huge difference and can easily wipe out any power savings from using other green products such as the Philips Eco TV. (Check out our guide to TV power consumption for more green tips.)"

I don't know what a standard blu-ray player uses. I think my PS3 uses over 200 watts though.

No. Not even the 60GB PS3 on the 90nm process uses 200 watts (two 100watt light blubs). The 60GB PS3s use about 175 watts.

The new PS3 use 65nmRSX and 65nm Cell. The MAX power usage is under 120 watts.

Basically, you use less than $.05 for a movie (depending on price per Kwh). How many people can afford $.05 for a movie?

I dunno man.. in today's economic environment I'm pretty strapped... $.05 buys me .... alright well I can't think of anything but if I had $.10 I could at least make a copy of my face on the library copier...

I wonder how many people say, "I can only play games 2 hours a day or my electric bill will be too high"

My mistake. I thought it said 200 watts on the sticker on the bottom. Mine is the 60 gb model though.

It's a 200 watt power supply in the 60GB PS3, but that does not represent the power draw for certain tasks.
