Default Blu-Ray Setup

I have had a 1080p HDTV for awhile and just bought a Blu-ray. When i watch movies the movie (Blu-ray) has black bars at top and bottom of my screen. I am using an HDMI cable. When I view other features on the disc I get full screen. The movie is Blu-ray and claims 1080i/2.35:1. I've read the user manual several times and can't figure what I have set wrong. Any ideas?

TV: Visio 46" HDTV 1080p Full HD
HDMI connection used
Blu-ray is a Magnavox from Wal-Mart

Any help would be appreciated.

those black bars are meant to be there, its called widescreen mode. you can change it to full, but you lose PQ.

2.35:1 is wider than 1.85:1 is wider than 16x9, which is a HDTV's aspect ratio. Nothing wrong with what you're experiencing as it is meant to be that way. Make sure you calibrate your TV to get the best experience out of the whole thing.
