Default HT Room Layout

In the process of moving into new house. Looking for suggestions on room layout. Previous owners had a 27" TV above gas logs built into wall, I'm looking to change it up a bit.

Top of gas logs is 37 1/2" so I'm figuring 42-45" above the ground and seating at least 16-20' away.

Any suggestion on setup. TV is a 50" DLP. Would build shelving under each window for electronics.

Current Layout

The Way I want it.

What sound system or layout spec is going in there?

Somewhat off topic (sorry), but how did you do the drawings? Is it a freeware program or something fancier (read: $$)? I have ideas for how to paint my HT room, but it would be nice to preview it as you've done!

Cheers

Looks like Google Sketchup to me, pretty good job, too.

Keep it as low as possible - you don't want to be lookup upwards too much to see the screen. Looks like it would work out fine, but your L/R speakers are going to be all the way to the sides...and where will the center go, above the TV?

The L/R speakers can go either under each window, or on the outer edge of each window. The Center channel I was thinking if I had a built in or ledge just under the TV it could go there.
Example

Default center channel/too close to the Fire Logs (?)

This seems like a potential problem to me - maybe if there is another Thick piece of material (wood/metal block) between the Fire logs and Center Channel speaker/Shelf, it could provide some Heat seperation?

Just a suggestion - there are oodles of nice 16:9 screenshots on the screenshot thread that you could use for your TV image

It looks fine to me, nice sketches btw! One comment is that I would recommend that you re-think that 16-20' seating distance as it's too far away for the recommended distance for a 50" screen. Google HD viewing distances if you're interested or not if you just want to sit that far away from it (supposedly the human eye loses the added resolution if the viewing distance is too great).

2-3 layers of heat resistant dry wall + insulation + wood on the bottom?

Sounds like a plan to me, but I am no specialist. Anyone else see any problems with his solution? Looks like it would do the trick.

Well, heat is going to come out of the front of the fireplace as well. I mean, that's why you have it. A lot of that is going to travel straight upwards into that speaker. Having a mantle below it might be a better idead if it's possible. Alternatively you may want to mount it above the TV and tilt it down.

Why not run the fireplace for a bit and then see how hot it gets where you want to place the speaker?

*edit* Either the pic didn't load or I started posting too soon to see it. Didn't realize you were putting that under the speaker. I'm no expert but it looks good to me.

Thats why I'm here as well, cause I'm no expert. I may toy around with the idea of putting the Mantle-Speaker-TV. But still use multiple sheets of drywall and insulation.

Here is another render.
Going to get exact measurements of window locations(betewwn ground and outside wall) and of gas log measurements.(Top of gas log unit is 37.5 above the ground)

I will try and snap some actual pics of the room as well.

Just and FYI...during the day you will need to keep the window blinds down as you may not be able to see the tv from the glare of the windows? And as far as how low you have the tv...depends on how far back the furniture is. The higher the tv the farther back the furniture. I was going to mount our tv above the fireplace but was too close to the furniture and ended up putting it in the corner of the room on the wall on an arm mount with an equipment stand below. Looks better...no glare from windows and can put a picture above the mantle. Course, our fireplace is built into the wall. And as for subs...you could do an in-wall?? They aren't the best but would look more pleasing. Same goes for all the speakers. In-walls are the way to go if you can. I myself have don't have in walls. But the speakers are small enough and on stands that they don't take away from the room. And also where is your equipment going? I'd be happy to take a picture of my set up if you are interested.

DLP's do not have great vertical viewing angles. I LOVE my DLP and the picture quality is awesome, but a DLP REALLY needs to be placed at viewing height.

OOPS! Sorry didn't see it was a DLP.. I have a 46" Sammy LCD on my wall. I still would like to know where your equipment is going to go?

And yes...I agree...the angles on the DLP would be bad that high up. You'd have to tilt it which...well...no. Not an option. And looks goofy.

I have a few opinions, but I just want to precede them saying that I have very little experience doing this.

As others have stated putting a DLP on top of the fireplace may be a bit awkward. I agreed with that from the beginning but didn't really say anything as you seemed to really be pushing for that idea. Now on to the ideas!

What would happen if you rotated your whole setup 90 degrees to the wall opposite the two windows that are to the left of the couch in one of your pictures.

You could place the tv on the floor and some floor standing front speakers next to it. You would need some sort of storage or rack for all your entertainment system pieces (blu-ray player, receiver, etc). This would open up the spot above the fireplace for some sort of cool art work (painting or maybe a movie poster of some sort if you are going for strictly just a home theater room).
