Very nice. I saw enough of this show to see that it's good, but I never did pick it up on DVD. Now's my chance.

Great price on Amazon right now. I've had my eye on checking this out for some time. Should I blind buy it as a person who is not a big anime fan, but has enjoyed some in the past? I haven't really seen much anime that isn't from the 80's & 90's.

When I was in high school I was a member of this mail-order anime VHS club, every month I would get 2 anime tapes in the mail. Some of the ones I remember I used to like a lot were Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, Street Fighter II The Animated Movie.

I kinda liked Trigun, Serial Experiments Lain, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, GTO, Tenchi Muyo.

I wasn't into Robotech, Gundam, Patlabor, Ranma 1/, Escaflowne, probably others I can't remember much.

Outside of all that stuff which I know from the anime VHS club, I did used to watch Dragon Ball Z, but not since middle school really. A few years ago I did watch the original series of Full Metal Alchemist, and I really enjoyed that. I watched Samurai 7 and thought that was really cool also. I am a big fan of Studio Ghibli movies, but they don't seem all that similar non-Ghibli animes to me for some reason, they just seem like a genre unto themselves.

But just in general, I don't watch much anime, and haven't seen a single anime movie or episode since probably 2012. It's just not really on my radar, really. I am a huge fan of horror movies. But since I've liked a lot of animes in the past, I've thought about getting into it again with some blu-rays if the price is right, and this one looked interesting to me.

So what do you all think? Worth a blind buy for me? Will this get me back into anime or turn me off to it or what do you all think?

Worth a blind buy callahan, it's a shounen anime so probably has more in common with Fullmetal Alchemist and Trigun in that list you posted, but it's about as far removed from any sci-fi actioner as you can get. The anime is mostly faithful to the original manga so the writing is brilliant and it's very much a "battle of wits" detective/villian kinda show with a fantastical, operatic tone that's really ramped up to 11 in the anime.

You read the manga? The anime is totally faithful during the first half, but for some reason they decided to cut about 40% of the story out of the 2nd half! Bit of a shame really, but the anime just about works very well regardless.

no, I haven't. I guess I'll check it out if it has a better second half

I finally got around to watching the first episode of this today (the product was back-ordered, out of stock when I bought it so I had to wait a while to receive it).

I did have a quick question or two about the viewing experience. As someone who is pretty unfamiliar with anime releases, I don't know if this is normal or if I just need to tweak my settings in the disc's setup menu.

I'm playing in English with subtitles turned off.

The audio seems incredibly quiet. I have to turn my entertainment center up to 65 to be able to hear the dialogue clearly, which is weird, because if I go past 50 on most other blu-rays it is ear-shatteringly loud.

The other thing is, there is a lot of Japanese text that appears on screen, including what appear to be chapter titles or other such things, and with subtitles turned off, there is no English overlay of what this text translates to at all. Do I have to turn on English subtitles if I want to know what the text onscreen says?

I find it distracting to have the subtitles on while playing English audio, largely because the subtitles don't match the audio, it appears that the subtitles are a different translation than the dub.

But I wasn't planning to watch this in Japanese, because I kind of want it on in the background while I'm working or doing other things. So do I just need to watch it in Japanese and read the subtitles, or should I just forget about reading the Japanese text in an English translation, or is there something else that I'm missing to get the most out of watching this?

I've heard that's one of the big complaints with this release, is the lack of English subtitles for Japanese text. It didn't affect my purchasing decision, since I prefer to watch in Japanese, but if you're watching the English dub, you'll probably have to make do without being able to read the text.

I can't speak for this release as I don't own it, but it's very unusual for an anime release to not have at least two English subtitle options: One gives you Eng subs for everything (for those watching in Japanese) and the other option should give you Eng subs on signs & text so you can watch it in English. Either check your BD menus or check the subtitle options when you're playing the show.

They didn't include subs for the Japanese text? For a show that revolves around characters that perform godlike, supernatural feats through writing? That's a pretty monumental **** up if you ask me!

Thanks for the suggestion, but I checked and there is definitely only one English subtitles option, it contains all dialogue in addition to the on-screen text translations.

Yeah, I think it's a pretty big oversight, and I was shocked about it as someone who is really watching an anime series on blu-ray for the first time.

So for now I've decided to go ahead and turn the subtitles on and just learn to ignore them at the bottom of the screen. The text translations always appear at the top of the screen, so they're easy to differentiate those "subtitles" (supertitles?) from the dialogue ones at the bottom. It's not my favorite way to have to watch the show, but I do like the English dub translation & voice acting enough to prefer it this way to watching with the Japanese audio track.

Also, for any other owners, I had a question about the bonus features:

Are they generally safe to watch after completing each episode on a disc? I just finished watching the first 8 episodes (disc 1) and was curious about the bonus features on Disc 1, but wasn't sure if I should wait until I've seen the whole series first. They seem pretty safe to watch without it spoiling later episodes, but I wasn't positive.

Oh, and the show is really awesome so far, I'm glad I bought it!

I live in Rio, Brazil.
I always order stuff from the United States, since my Region is also A for Blu-Rays. I've never had any problem with it... until today.

My Death Note boxset arrived and, when I loaded the discs, this is what happened:
I've never seen something like this before. I Blu-Ray Region A locked for United States and Canada only? What the hell??????

That is the relatively recent geo-locking feature only on newer players. It's mostly intended to prevent Japanese consumers (Japan is Region A like North America) from importing cheaper American discs. A few Region A Blu-rays are coded with it.

I'm not sure if there is a workaround short of getting a region-free player.
