Default reciever humming= annoying!

i bought the Sony HT-S2300. its a great little htib... but the reciever hums.. like a high pitch noise of different frequencies.. it does this only when its off/standby.. I have it plugged into a Monster 600 power strip.

Is this normal.. its in my bedroom so. at night its noticeable enough.. I have been turning off the monster breaker is that ok?

Is the humming sound coming from the speakers?

See if it still happens when you disconnect your incoming cable TV coax. My Comcast cable used to cause a very low speaker hum. If that's not it, maybe you have a ground loop issue.

the receiver is humming.. its more like a high frequency whine. its coming from the reciever..im guessing the amplifier.. the tv coax is not running into the receiver. when i turn off the monster strip it makes a whine that decends in tone before becoming silent

The coax doesn't have to run directly into the receiver, mine was causing a low buzz/hum (of course my cable box is plugged into the receiver) - it's just a quick check you can make. But that whining tone sounds odd, maybe the amp is near death...

Yeah, if its not the speakers, it not a ground loop issue. Could be the amp, or the power supply, or anything like that but it's probably a hardware issue that may or may not mean that it's going out. If its under warranty, get it serviced.

Could be a grounding issue. Can you verify if your outlet is grounded properly?

Probably a loose wire in the power transformer. It's possible that it's just a cheap design, but a replacement will prove it one way or the other.
